Litepanels Gemini 2×1 RGB-WW soft panel

Promo is still going on at BH. I just grabbed one. Already have one bi-color Astra 6X and really, really like it.

What cases are you all using? The hard shell looks super bulky. I drive a Cherokee and I don't see myself flying w/it so was considering the Portrabrace. Couldn't tell if I would really like it though. Anyone have a suggestion?

I bought the portabrace for the gemini (which has yet to arrive). For the mean time it's getting strapped into my front seat as the plastic build scares me vs the metal skypanel.

The hard case is nice, but since it's riding in a production van and not a grip truck the soft case made more sense to me.

Quick reply! I think I'm getting the portabrace also. Did you get the version w/or w/out wheels?

Can you double up on colours in RGB mode? When using non RGB lights for colour effects, sometimes you need to double or even triple up on gels to get the desired effect. With skypanels, often their saturation adjustments aren't enough. I've heard it's a real challenge to overcome. I don't think the Geminis will be any different but am just curious.

You could...put gels on the RGB light. :)

Meet The Gaffer #74: Gemini vs Skypanel

While the SkyPanels appear a overall better choice in this comparison, at least for a Gaffer, it would be good to see tests of the lamps’ TLCI, as the ARRIs take a nosedive when set to Tungsten.

As much as I’d like to pickup some RGB+ LEDs, high TLCI at all color temperatures doesn’t appear to be their forte.

Skypanel is by far the better light. But for an owner op the Gemini fits the bill price wise for sure. I've brought mine on a few jobs and it's performed well. I haven't yet had to use it outside where I would miss the extra power of the skypanel.

From what I've read the Skypanel is only 10% more powerful at 5600k and equal to the Gemini at 3200k. Gemini doesn't have an option for the intensifier though. Is there something else I'm missing?

Is that reading photometrics? There needs to be a beam angle standard now! The S60-C obviously has an advantage in power consumption (420w vs. the Gemini's 325w) but their varying beam angles might level the playing field. Although, as has been noted in another thread, you're likely moving the light with the narrower beam further away from a frame to fill it so maybe the effective difference is larger than 10%?

Arri's skypanel page states its beam angle with a note that it's a half peak angle. What does this mean?

A friend who has both says they are nearly indistinguishable in real-world context and the Gemini v Skypanels episode of Meet the Gaffer measures them to be about 10% apart at 5600k. They speculate that the Litepanels is a bit spottier, which would help w/the output.

My bud said that at 3200k he measured the same output but that the Skypanel is a lot brighter in color mode.

This is the only glaring thing I've noticed on some shoots. Worked on a horror movie recently and used the skypanel to give us a red/green wash at times and the litepanel doesn't have the punch in the background that the arri does. However it's not a HUGE difference for the money.

New FX modes for this light are incredible. Customizable emergency lights, fire mode, lightning, TV/CRT, strobe, etc...

I got a beta from a friend but they should be out soon. It's very stable on my unit.

Easy to customize right on the display and they work great.
