Couldn't really decide what for to put this in, but this one seems like the best fit. I'm making a list of codecs; I'm looking to see if there's any I missed.

Hi Andrew,
Not sure this is the right part of the forum for this...I guess Post Production covers editing codecs.

Either way, here are a few more Camera Codecs (and these are not just tape formats) - MPEG IMX, DigiBeta, BetaCamSP, BetaCamSX, HDCam, HDCam SR, D5

Workflow: Photo JPEG, JPEG2000, and many more.

Then there are wrappers such as MXF, AVI, Quicktime...etc.

Then there are compression codecs such as h.264, Mpeg2, Windows Media, Flash...etc.

What is your aim with the list? A little description might help other more accurately answer your questions.

Clearly we are not the target market for the book since you are asking us what to put in the book, but who are you hoping to target this book to? Generally folks writing books on technical subjects have substantial backgrounds on the subject they are writing about. It seems you may be interested in writing a "primer" for people just getting started?

that was exactly my first thought.
I'm a drummer, so i would say that this is like compiling a list of time signatures to include in a book, and asking for help in identifying them.

That would be the ideal target audience, yes.

Man,

I would LOVE to have a quick reference to point people to to keep from contiually explaining a codec vs. a container, or trying to explain thin raster versus full.

Let us know when you complete this thing. Any chance it will be published as a eBook or something?

Hell, I'd love to have one to point myself to. Amazed and confused is becoming a way of life . . .

The Wikipedia article (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Codec) already has a good basic description of what codecs are, and how they differ from endecs and modems. It also includes links to several lists of codecs.

If you were going to write a codec FAQ (or whatever), that Wiki article seems like both a good place to start, and a benchmark to exceed. Else you would just be re-inventing the wheel, IMHO. Google returns 3,760,000 hits for: codec faq
