List of Cameras that Shoot 4:2:2 or better

Hey Guys!

Not sure if this is the right place to put this or not. (Feel free to move Mods, I'm sure you will as needed)

I think this is a question that will come up more and more as this aspect of camera tech evolves. So....how's about a list of cameras that shoot 4:2:2 or better. I'll update this first post as the results pour in. If you want to include cameras that can shoot 4:2:2 with external recorders....fine....just make sure to note it in your post. Also....I'm sure some of these will be added and the removed later due to ACTUAL results. (If I'm not mistaken, not "all that glitters is gold"....so if you know something....help us out on this!) Mad love for DVXUsers everywhere!

It's not that particular cameras shoot 4:2:2, it's that particular recording formats record 4:2:2.

So, you can make your list by using the recording formats. And that would be:
Panasonic P2 cameras, using either DVCPRO50, DVCPRO-HD or AVC-Intra
Sony XDCAM-MPEG422 cameras (such as the PDW700 and PDW800)
Canon XF cameras
GH1 in 720/30p mode with the PTool 4:2:2 MJPG hack
Sony HDCAM-SR camcorders

There. That's pretty much the list.

As for external recording, any camera with an SDI or HDMI output port should be able to generate 4:2:2, and when paired with a 4:2:2 recorder, should be able to record that.

Sheesh Barry.....I feel silly. :) Can I get a log-in to your brain sometime? It seems like there's a few answers in there! :) Thanks!

Can anyone "vouch" for the 4:2:2 mode in the GH13? Is it TRULY 4:2:2....no smoke or mirrors? (So using the 4:2:2 in the GH13 would produce superior results doing green screen work ~all things being equal~ than shooting 4:2:0 on the GH13?)

Weisscam HS-2 outputs 4:2:2
Believe Alexa is 4:4:4 via HD-SDI and 4:2:2 Native?

You sure about that? Aren't they HDV, which is 4:2:0? Unless you refer to the XH G1, which has an HDI output. I suppose it can record 4:2:2 to an external recorder.

"DIGIC DV II is the next generation of Canon's exclusive DIGIC DV signal processing technology. DIGIC DV II processes the HD signal at 1440 x 1080 with 4:2:2 color sampling. Designed specifically for processing the immense volume of information in 1080 HD signals, DIGIC DV II ensures optimal image quality for HD video."

Processing is different from recording though, and it records to HDV which is 4:2:0.

I think that's through the HD/SDI output only. It records to HDV tape, and as far as I know, HDV is 4:2:0 at 25Mbps.

"In addition to this, the XH G1 also includes Canon’s ‘professional jackpack’ a suite of industry-standard connections designed for the professional studio. These include an HD-Serial Digital Interface output for transporting uncompressed video at full 1920 x 1080 resolution with 4:2:2 chroma subsampling, plus time code and embedded audio." - from Canon Europe's website.

B&H p316 clearly states it records in 422 space. But I can't seem to confirm this on Canon's web page.

XL/XH HD Camcorders definitely record 4:2:0 onto HDV tapes (or 4:1:1 in DV modes).

XLH1(s) and XHG1(s) have the ability to output 4:2:2 via their HD-SDI ports.

4:2:2 color sampling on a hacked GH1? is this true? or is it just smoke and mirrors as HHL questioned.

The MJPEG mode in the GH1/GH2 shoots 4:2:2, BUT...only at 30p. I think the PAL versions also only do 30p. With the hack you can change the frame rate down, but it deletes frames so it's not true 24p. I never use it because of that, but you can change the ratio to make the MJPEG have true anamorphic ratios so you don't need to unsquease if you use an anamorphic lens.

The GH1 can be hacked to change frame size, but it's not true full HD. It only goes up to 1400 something , but it looks just as good as the AVCHD 1080p. The GH2 can have full 1080p frame size with the hack. The GH2 looks like it will stopped being made around September/October so if you can wait, you'll get the best closeout deals then. I got my GH1 for $350 then bought another for $299, body only, when the GH2 came out.

EDIT: ONLY the MJPEG mode shoots 4:2:2, the AVCHD shoots 4:2:0 and can't be changed with the hack. You can get around 100mbs max hack for AVCHD and around 60-80mbs for MJPEG with a fast card on the GH1. GH2 has hacked I frame AVCHD up to 200mbs and MJPEG with fastest cards.

Which hack provides 4:2:2?
