Lilliput Monitor with HMC150?

I'm looking for an external monitor for the HMC150. I'd love to get a SmallHD, but it's a bit more than I want to spend. I see alot of the Mark5D users hooking up a cheap Lilliput monitor over HDMI. Sounds like it works OK.

Anyone here try one? For $220 I'm thinking I'll give it a try.

I also have seen it used with the 7d with a lengthy review. Seems to be a little brighter and has limited color controls... But for focus and framing seems to work nicely.

I'm thinking Manhattan - maybe Marshall with the focus assist...

Thats the one I was looking at... we don't need the touch screen and it adds weight. I think it wasn't until videographers starting ordering and taking out the touch screen that it even became an option.

Looking forward to a good HMC150 usage review!

I ordered one without the touch screen. It's in the mail and should arrive Monday. Look for a "go/nogo" soon after and a more complete review to follow.
 
I went in on that group buy last December and that little panel is pretty nice, actually. I use it for focus and framing with a Handy 35 adapter. It's not brutally crisp and the colors are not that great, but I've been able to nail all of my focus pulls (seat of the pants) with that screen.

I'm also looking for a good field monitor. I've been looking at the Sony LMD-1750W 17" Professional HD Monitor hooking it up to hmc-150 via hdmi with an dvi adaptor has anyone tried this monitor or know anything about it.

Anything non-HD is going to be more for framing your shots and having an 'idea' of what you are shooting. With a decent HD monitor you can check focus... and with a pro monitor you get proper exposure and color representation.... I guess we have to pick how many things are important to us. I was hoping the lilliput would be decent in all those categories...

I have the non-hd monitor for a jib, I would recommend the little extra for something HD.

The monitor showed up this afternoon. Here is a quick pic...

I have to say this unit is better than I'd expected. I've never used a pro monitor, so I can't really compare, but this thing looked clean and the colors were very nice to my eye. The HDMI seems to make a pretty crisp image. I definitely can get good focus out of it, much crisper than the flipout display. From a first blush, worth the money, though I'd have like to gotten in on a group buy.

One cool note is that the monitor has options to flip the image. Might be cool for various mounting options.

As you might notice, the image is slightly cutoff on the sides. I didn't check to see If I can modify the settings for that. I'll give it a go later and let you know.
EDIT: I checked and I couldn't adjust the overscan settings, so a bit does get trimmed on the edges.

I have a plan for batteries that I'll post about later. Let me know if you have questions.

Is their a strong lack of detail in the whites? Looks like its blown out a bit... Adjustments help any?
 
Talked with Manhattan today - going to take a look at their monitors on Sunday. I am lucky they are literally down the street!

Oh decisions decisions...

Not being able to adjust the overscan is disappointing. I'm committed to never buying another camera or monitor for a camera that does not show everything the camera is recording in the frame. I've been bitten too many times in the past.

[Edit] Though I just re-read it and saw the price - Hmmm.... may be worth compromising just to test it ! :D Where are these puppies available from ?

I'll agree this monitor looks sweet, although ideally it would be nice to see the full frame and not worry about including "bonus material" on the editing bay. Although, you could just use the viewfinder overscan and double check each time for major framing issues.

The overscanning is common for on what actually is going to be shown on a HDTV. I think its kind of good to see where they are going to crop the shots... But you do have to double check that for that extra 5% it looks like - if you need to keep things out of the shot.
 
I agree. The overscan is a minor issue. Something I'll need to keep in mind and double check. Not a big deal as I will likely still use the focus tools on the flipout monitor to double check focus.

I tried some focusing tests with the monitor. Using the monitor alone it was WAY easier to nail focus than on the flipout (without the focus assist). For me, the big thing will be that that I'll be more likely to notice to notice that I'm even slightly out of focus.

As far as image adjustments go, there is really only brightness / contrast adjustments. But contrary to the photo I posted above, you can see detail in the shadows and bright areas. Also, I finally pulled the screen protector off to see the image on the matte finish. Looked very nice.

This monitor is rated at (<6W). I've got my eye on a 26 Wh battery that should work.
 
Kurt, I am really close to pulling the trigger on this. I notice though that the 8" model is the same price as the 7". Is there some reason you only got the 7"? To me, the specs look the same, unless I'm missing something. I know you've only had for it for a day, but is there anything minus the overscan you are disappointed in? Thanks!
