GH3 Liking the GH3 + Rokinon Cine 85mm for Interviews

I recommend getting this lens in a Nikon F mount for more flexibility. In Nikon mount it should fit Nikons with no adapter needed. The Nikon F to M4/3 adapter I use cost me $17.95 (fits just tight enough), and a Nikon F to Canon EOS mount adapter would be about the same or a bit less.

I think you can also get it in a Nikon mount with focus confirmation chip (for use on more modern Nikons).

No matter what configuration or lens mount you get it in, this lens is fully manual only on all lens functions.

What adapter is that?

That's what I have - though to be honest, the chip is fairly useless... I prefer to judge with my eyes.

EDRAKEL, have you tried other m4/3 adapters? What made you pick the Fotodiox over the others that are available. I'm looking to get one, but price is not
my only concern.

Thanks, Bruce. I see that one is Nikon to EOS, but I also see one for m4/3.

Ah. I thought you were asking about the EOS to m4/3.

I just had to return a RainbowImaging Nikon F to m4/3 adapter, I had ordered one about 7 months ago when my son gave me back a Nikon EM I had given him with 2 lenses. It fit great and right now I have it on my Rokinon 85mm Cine lens. I had ordered a second one, just got it in and it flat will not fit the Nikon lens. The first has no brand name on it, the one I just returned is marked "Fotasy NK - M4/3".

As I said in a post above they are "churning out" these things in China and QC is definitely missing. I ordered a Bower from B&H in it's place.

Can someone explain to me how this lens works with the GH3?
I understand that focus is manual and that focus is achieved by using the focusing ring on the lens, but how does the aperture settings work?

I've heard conflicting information regarding this. Can you fully (manually) control the f-stop on the lens itself while it is connected to the GH3 or is there something you need to do to the lens before mounting on the camera (obviously with the adapter) in regards to it's aperture?

It has a geared aperture ring (Cine version) near the camera body that you can adjust with your hand or a follow focus.

All manual. Nikon version focus's the other way. No other lens does, so keep that in mind. I never got used to it so I get the EF (Canon) version.

Does that mean I can stop down the lens using the aperture control on the Rokinon lens, or I am stuck with a wide open lens which I can only control via iso and shutter speed?

Yes, you can stop the lens down (or open it up) with the aperture ring on the lens. The camera cannot control it, though.

You set focus and aperture on the lens, ISO and shutter on the camera.

Thank you Bruce for clarifying that. I became a little confused when I was reading about the adapters and some of the information on them indicated that
the lens aperture needs to be set on (in this case the Canon) the camera and then it can be mounted on the adapter for use on the micro 4/3 camera.

That is only true for Canon lenses that have an electronically controlled aperture (like the amazing Sigma 18-35mm F1.8). The Rokinon/Samyang CINE series are fully manual with no electronics no mater the mount or body they are used on.

Rehatching an old thread.

Does the Rokinon Cine lenses differ in focus throw with Canon mount to Nikon mount? Meaning, is the Rokinon Canon mount focus throw different than the Rokinon Nikon mount lenses? If they are, do you focus to infinity CW or ACW on the Rokinon Canon mount lenses?

I have a Rokinon set (24,35,85) and I must say they are just amazing. I use these mostly for set up shots, planned stuff, interviews on C300/C100. I have an array of L glass as well, but I am selling most of it because I always ended up going back to the Rokinons. They really are that good... sleeper hits. They aren't as contrasty as the Canons but I prefer that look. And the most often Canon lens used in my kit is the 24-105. Great all a rounder for run n gun, nice and stable.

For the Gh4, I am using mostly native glass. I just prefer the smaller lenses. Nothing is stopping me from using a dumb adapter (and I have one) to use the manual Rokinons on the Gh4. However the best glass I have out of them all happens to be the 42.5mm Panasonic/Leica F1.2 Noctitron. Expensive, but wow, what an image. It easily matches the best Canon primes I have used, and it's usable and sharp wide open vs the Rokinons which tend to need a little stop down to be perfect (the 85 aside).

I notice the skin tones in the OP's shot were very unnatural. Was that planned?

I took a look at a couple of Samyang lenses; the ones I saw do indeed follow their respective mounts focusing direction.
