F5: LightWeight F5 / F55

What would you guys suggest as ways to make the F5 / 55 as lightweight as possible? What battery weighs the least? I don't care about run times. What viewfinder or monitor weighs the least? Any tricks would be welcome to shed the pounds.

I just weighed my Sony FL75 batt, it's 2lbs 2oz. IDX's website says their 68wh and 88wh batts are 1.15 and 1.63lbs, respectively.

I'm happy with my ET Micron baseplate setup to save weight, it's one reason why I chose it over anything else. There's not too much to it, truth be told. If you don't needs rods or FF, then you can save a bunch just sticking the tripod head's QR plate on the bottom of the cam.

Honestly though, I think the LIGHTEST rig would be nikon or EF lenses, Sony handle & EVF bracket, and one of the above IDX batts, assuming their numbers are legit.

I find getting lightweight is much more a state of mind and method of working (no mattebox, no FF, screw on filters, etc) than say one battery over another.

I assume you're going into wilderness and need to pack all this?

Aha. Well then, I'd consider EF lenses on the Optitek adapter, with a small IDX battery.

I wouldn't worry about the weight of the monitor quite as much because you'd likely mount it to the handle of the gimbal rig where there's no weight limit?

If you could figure out a way to get a AB or VMount on the frame of the gimbal rather than the pan/tilt mech, I'm sure you could get things really low.

Zeiss Arriflex BL1 lenses with an aluminum PL adapter would be even lighter and have true Zeiss quality in an F2 set. Those lenses weigh ounces rather than pounds.

Ralph - Could you keep us posted on your progress on this one, I'm interested in the coming FreeFly MoVi 10. If you can get your rig to under 10 lbs, that would be way cool.

I guess first thing is to run off an external battery

(edit: that is not on the stabilised portion of the rig - could be on the handles or on your body)

Not really. I'm exploring the idea of putting the camera on a hand held gimbal, so naturally I want to make it as light as possible.

If you are thinking about a single handed devices like a TIFFEN Merlin, your wrist will not be able to hold it up for very long regardless of what you strip off the camera. If it is two handed then it is another story. Merlin is designed really for scouting steadicam sequences and using a small handicam.
