Lighting Tests (lowel) Comments?

I'm fairly inexperienced with lighting, I know what I want stuff to look like but getting it takes me way longer than ide like ;). I setup my Lowel lights in my dining room yesterday and got some footage. Any comments on what looks wrong, right, what to change or watch out for. I'm open to whatever advice I can get. If it looks fine, then just say so :).

Your shots have zero contrast. No highlights and ZERO depth.

We can use light to create depth on a 2D Frame. I always bring up the Apple Drawing

Look at how many values are used simply to create an apple sketch.

Yea I realize what I did now. I lit the room as if she was going to be facing towards camera but instead she was sitting sideways FACING the key light....like an idiot I didn't think about that so all of her facial shadows got cancelled out. It wouldn't have looked flat if I would've had her turn towards the camera more.

Ugh I'm an idiot. Thanks for the link J.R.

Those close ups look much better than the first grabs but you should really add an eyelight and some sort of back light. At least now you have some play between the darks and the highlights! Keep it up!

Agreed, i think you're "getting there".

Kyle, like you, I'm no expert, but I do find the close up stills more interesting then your first test.

Lowel Rifa for key with flexfill for fill/Pro for hair light/DP for background light.

It CAN be done. Get a flexfill reflector and arm, a few dimmers, and you'll be in business.

The third test I posted was filmed with a Rifa 66 for room ambience & key, Omni on reflector for some fill, and the pro light to the left for the rim lighting and background.
