weird, i shot some stuff in letterbiox but its not unsqueezed anamorphic (720 x 405) ... rather its 440 or something ?? Can anyone explain this at all ?

The DVX letterbox mode simply crops of the top and bottom of the full 4:3 frame with black bars to give you the appearance of 16X9. Many of us prefer to shoot in normal 4:3 mode and compose for the 16x9 area by using a framing overlay on the LCD screen. (I make the Screen Skins overlays, so I'm biased in that regard).
In your NLE of choice, you can simply add the black bars at top and bottom.
Having the full frame to work with allows you to "fudge" the image up or down a bit to correct for headroom, etc. Once you add the black bars in camera, you're stuck with them.
Hope this helps.

no it doesnt .... and thats my whoel point. It gives it the appearance of something taller than 16:9. The footage I have is *NOT* 720x405.

Does anyone know why the image is taller than true 16x9 ?

Are you saying that the image appears distorted regarding it's height, or that the black bars are "thinner" than 16x9?

The black bars are too thin, thus making the image between them taller than 16:9. No distortion. I would very much like to know why as well.

Gary,
If it's a Photshop or png file, just drop it on the top track in Vegas and make sure the Alpha channel is set right. It will appear as a letterbox/mask on all tracks below it.
Hope this helps.

Ahhhh, that was my problem. I dropped it below my video track. It doesn't fit though... Looks like I'll have to make my own (it's not at the top and bottom, it's closer to the middle). I'm shooting 4:3 if that makes a difference.
