Let's talk lenses

Ken Rockwell wrote in his review of the Sigma 18-35 ''Of interest mostly to cinematographers focusing back and forth between two subjects, the image from the Sigma 18-35mm f/1.8 DC gets slightly smaller as focused more closely''.

I've never noticed this to be honest, but I wasn't looking for it. I just had a quick look at a rack focused shot I did with the lens a while ago and I'm sure Ken is correct. To be honest, if you have your audience engaged, they are not going to notice it. But to answer your question, I believe it's exactly the same optics as the regular Sigma lens.

Yes it doesn't appear here I missed it. It looks like the 18-35mm has breathing. so it's a factor to consider. Cinema Glass users are very sensitive to it.

But for me personally, I actually like a bit of breathing in my focus pulls as it gives a slight dynamic sense instead of a completely static feel. I might be the only shooter who ever liked breathing though!

The 18-35 does breathe, although not a hideous amount. GL Optics do not alter the optical elements of the lens at all, so it will breathe the same amount as the lens on which it is based.

Once I get some cash in I really want to pick up the Sony PL prime set. 6 quality lenses for $13K. Almost seems too good to be true. Its still more than my current setup of lenses (Rok primes and Nik zooms) but its enticing to jump into real cinema glass.

Anybody work with the Tokina Cinema zooms? They seem a light, cheaper PL lens. 16-28 and 50-135 are my favorites. Both of them can be had for around $8500.

I've worked with the Tokina zooms 11-16, 16-50, 28-70 (Angenieux design) and 28-80 and have replaced all of them with Nikon zooms with exception to the 11-16 which is ok.

The rest exhibit some crazy haze (called Tokina glow) at specific focal lengths which you might not see in your VF but you will definitely see in post.

I imagine that the shorter the zoom the less prone to issues these lenses would have. I'd be curious to know Chris if your 50-135 has ever had this problem?

cheers,

Dennis, I don't have them but curious to try them out. No one has them in their rental arsenal so it would be a purchase, then return if it doesn't work out. I am interested in the 16-28 and 50-135, they are the bigger lenses. Lots of great options right now!

what do you know about these Angeniuex Optimo DP lenses? there are two for sale from Alan Gordon in Hollywood, on Ebay right now and they seem like a really good deal! One is DP 16-42 and the other the DP 30-80.

Does anyone know for sure if this Optimo 30-80 would fit an F35... it has the long lens throat protrusion but it sounds like from what James was saying that may not matter as it was only the early early lenses that had that problem, not all DP rouge ones (and of course the new optimo style ones don't)

Rokinon is releasing 24/50/85 in PL Mount, but at a planned RRP of two and a half grand, I feel Sony's PL lenses make more sense, or even waiting on SLR Magic to start to fill out their PL range.
