Let's talk glass: Lenses for the AF100!

check out the dslr threads, cant remember why but concensus seemed to be tamron was preferred over tokina for that kind of zoom range

Any reason you went with the Tamron 17-50 instead of the Tokina?

The reviews, threads, personal recommendations... and it hasn't disappointed. You didn't ask about these two lenses, but here's the Tamron 17-50mm/F2.8 and the Sigma 50-150mm/F2.8 side by side, just in case you're interested. Please excuse the actors, they're not SAG.

Is there any lens, with more than 5x wide-zoom, with f4@tele and which starts from 12-14mm?
So far the best I have found is olympus 12-60.
This would be for the basic videography for eng-style & event, where the key point is that you don't have to change lens and add lights every time something happens.
Ideal would be 10x eng-lens which starts wide enough and has an extender.

Idea of using just EF-lenses is intriguing, then it would be very flexible to use 5d2 as b-camera and also have nice line-up for still photography.

Why not use the 14-140 for ENG use? I've searched for lenses that are both fast and has a decent zoom range but it's tricky. 15-100 seams to be the range to work within and the closest is Nikon/Canon lenses starting at 15-18 and at F2.8.

For commercial use I bet an Olympus 14-35 and a 50 macro will do just fine for 95% of my work but ENG is in another ballpark.

For straight up ENG, you aren't yet gonna get better than the 14-140 lens. I have seen some threads about different ENG lenses that were used on DSLRs. Can't remember where though. EDIT: see here http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthread.php?215367-Canon-ENG-B4-Lens-on-GH1&highlight=Canon+100+lens

In any case, I'm planning on shooting ENG style and I'm picking up a 70-200 f2.8, and either a 16-50 or 28-75. If you just plan to tripod and stand back, the 70-200 should work great. If you plan to get in there up close, a 16-50 or 28-75 should do pretty well.

I'm thinking of the getting the 70-200 as well, along with the 17-55 2.8 IS, depending on how this birger adapter works with the IS. I'm torn though, the 14-140 has the auto focus, which may come in handy on certain run and gun shoots. I guess I just need to practice manual focus under stress more.

Hey Rev,

I'm with you. I'm a news guy with a prod co. and I'm picking up an af 100 as a b cam.
I don't use the servo on eng glass to shoot per say, I use itbjust to have the flexibility to make 2-4 shot sequences from a single location.
I'm looking for a full manual, fast, zoom, workhorse lens for the af 100. Also looking for a fast wide zoom too.
Already have a zeiss 25mm/50mm primes for interviews etc...but need those workhorses to shoot b roll effectively
Any suggestions on nikon glass?

I'm not lookin for 2/3" eng lens. Just something similiar for af100.
Something like 14-140, but double the weight & price, f4@tele and maybe a way to use zoom lever. 12-120 would be even better. Integrated extender would be great.
If 4/3" video is success, I guess we will get something like that.

I guess that at least for starters I would want more flexibility than 3x zooms.
So at least 5x for me for starters.

The lummox lenses (lol) are too slow!

We'll just have to see... at higher ASA the Lumex lenses should do OK. Haven't used them on a GH still camera, but I shot hand held stills for years with the Nikon 80-200 with 400ASA film and it's an f4.5 used the images commercially, and by the way, zoomed relatively in with that lens would crisply focus the subject while softly blurring the background. So, it's not all about f1.4 to get shallow DOF.

I can't wait to do some tests, but I trust the "lummox" lenses as you call them won't live up to the just so damn extremely clever nickname with which you dubbed them.

No point waiting going to order the 14-140 and the voigtlander nikon f adapter for my zeiss zf.2's.

Also going to get a hotrod PL adapter :)

If your on a budget, It may not be a bad idea to try the Red pro primes- not quite as good barrels, but faster and better performance wide open. And as always, renting lenses is always an option- speaking of which, im dreaming of some cooke s4's on the af100 right now..

I was also wondering if anyone was thinking of using the RED pro primes. I love the price point, they are fast, and they are razor sharp. I have used them regularly along with MKII super speeds, and Cooke S4/i, and the RPPs were my favorite to shoot with. (I have to admit the Cooke S4/i lenses are a dream to AC with though, and I prefer to pull focus on them as the markings are clearer, but I can deal with that when saving $80K). I am kinda surprised there is not more talk of them. I am considering a set of them (if I can get the $$$$$ together) and the 7-17 to supplement them when shooting on the AF100.

after playing around with a number of still lenses on my GF 1, i'm going to say that a PL mount adapter and some proper cine lenses are going to make the AF 1 workable. THis is not to say that plenty of folks will be using still photo lenses on their AF's but the cine lens route is definitely the path I'm heading down because they are generally faster and easier to use for motion photography. Who the heck wants to be shooting at 1600 ISO just to milk an image out of a F4.0 - 5.6 lens?

Have you looked at any of the ebay $400 PL mounts Noel? I know the Hotrod stuff is good (I have loads of Zacuto stuff and you generally get what you pay for). Just curious if a cheaper unit will work as good.

***Edit: Just saw that Hotrod supply that great mount with the actaul PL, which is worth around 700 bucks.
