Lenses

Almost all of this parody was shot with the Sigma 30mm F1.4, I think it speaks for itself:

Flatter shots done with Bower 85mm F1.4 and a Canon 70-300mm IS zoom I believe. (The Canon isn't mine). Really wide shots done with 10-22mm Canon or Tokina 11-16mm.

There are a few Sigma 50mm F1.4 mixed in there as well, but they match so well to the 30mm I cannot remember which :)

im starting off with the EF 50mm f/1.8. and will get more as time goes on. Thanks for all the comments. a real big help.

I didnt shot on f2 but ive seen some vids with f1.9 35mm and i dont like the bokeh, looks like ugly blur not bokeh, sometimes lenses need to be stopped down a bit to show nice bokeh.

I find 50mm to be too long on a crop body like the 7D. It's even a little tight on a 5D2 sometimes ;) However, much of it depends on your shooting style. If you need shallow DOF you need to go with a longer lens or be much closer to the subject. If you need good DOF then the wider the lens the better. There is much hype over shallow DOF, and for some applications it's needed, but for other applications it's a complete disaster.

If I had to have only one lens with a crop body it would be in the 24mm - 35mm range.

The 50/1.8 isn't a bad lens (I've owned and sold two copies of it) but there is significant barrel distortion, manual focus is not so easy with the edge focus ring and the whole thing seems a little (lot) less smooth than many other lenses. For the price it's hard to complain, but there are others out there (including the Sigma) that are better.

My most used primes are the 24L and 35L. I've used lots of other glass, including Voigtlander, Leica & Zeiss, and they 'can' be sharper if used correctly, but for video, unless you have them side by side your viewer is unlikely to notice.

that crop factor on the 7D confuses me sometimes but on our last shoot I rented some Canon primes, a 50mm, Sigma 30mm, Canon 28mm, and Canon 24mm. We were in a high rise office shooting a drama. We were in a big office, but a lot of my shots were close, medium shots or CUs. Coming from 35mm I had only ever used a 50mm and a 35mm. I used the 30mm and the 24mm more with the 7D in that space. I've got the Tokina 11-16mm f2.8 too but elected not to use it. I've got to now consider the rental vs. purchase of the 30mm from Sigma because it's perfect for the 7D, at close range, for narrative. I don't think the 7D is the perfect camera, but I bought it to make films with and the Canon 50mm f1.4 and the Sigma 30mm are perfect for me in close quarters.

I have the Canon 50 1.8 and like others, like it but it is a little too long for many things, focus is difficult and it feels cheap. Optics are great but I wouldn't want to drop it.

The lens I use most for video is a Nikkor 24mm 2.8 .

I dont like distortion on faces when you go close with 24mm lens, its visible with some 28mm lenses too.Big nose and tiny ears.
