lens hood w/ ND filters

I'm curious, what do you folks use to keep lens flare out of your lens when you have an ND fader on there? Normally I use the lens hoods on my lenses but they don't fit when using an ND fader. I don't really want to use a mattebox. I imagine I could get some kind of cardboard/rubber band idea but that would look pretty ugly. What do you use?

Those variable ND filters usually have a front thread larger than the lens filter thread. For lenses other than wide angle I usually try to find rubber hoods with the proper depth and no vignetting to fit the front diameter.

For instance: The variable ND's that fit the 46mm lens threads (20mm f1.7, 25mm Pan/Leica f1.4) from Polaroid have a front thread of 49mm. So what I've done is to use a 49-52mm stepup ring and then am able to use 52mm rubber hoods I got from B&H.

I've left out the Lumix 14mm f2.5 because everything I've tried on that wide angle has vignetted. The Lumix 20mm f1.7 while not a wide angle does have a wider field of view than the 25mm Pan/Leica so I ordered a couple of different rubber wide angle hoods in 52mm and use the one that seems to work best.

I still haven't figured out the front size on the 52mm Polaroid variable ND (no real camera store here anymore) but I think it's going to turn out to be around 55mm.

I mostly use single strength ND filters (3 and 4 stop reduction) in 52mm and have stepup rings to "get me there" (most of my filters are 52mm from previous camera systems) and I've ordered a few Lumix 52mm lens caps to go over the filters (I work in dusty environments a lot).

Hope this info helps.

Thanks Bruce. I use a 62mm ND fader filter and just use step-up rings for all my lenses. It has a 72mm diameter on the outside. That's an excellent idea.

i use a cheap ebay rubber hoody too. also protects the ND when laying it down and around. i keep it fixed to the ND. just need to find a rear cap for the thing.
