C300: Lens Hood and Matte Box for CN-e zooms

Is there any kind of lens hood that works with the Canon 15.5-47 CN-e lens? I know the Canon 17-120 comes with a lens hood. Is that compatible with the 15.5-47 and 30-105? Is it available for purchase?

I see on B&H there are three 105mm thread lens hoods available: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/search?atclk=Size_105mm&ci=2226&N=4077634523+4294957234

It'd be nice if the lens hood could accept a cap.

Matte boxes are heavier, make changing lenses more difficult, and if you're not using filters, don't offer as many advantages over a lens hood. That, and I don't currently want to spend $2-$3k on a nice matte box, so it'll have to wait.

But...since I am planning to buy a matte box probably in the next few months or so, may as well turn this topic into recommendations for matte boxes as well.

I've been using the O'Connor O-box Matte box as a couple guys I work with own them. Seems decent, but is a bit finicky in some areas. Any recommendations? I gather Arri's Matte Box is likely good.

I own the O-Box but am planning on going with a Bright Tangerine Viv 5 in the near future.
I like the swing away option, and the ability to accept wider lenses.
The O-Box has been pretty solid over the last 4 years, just time for move over to BT for me.

I have the cine zooms and use the arri mb2. Pretty good and basic. I think bright tangerine makes a light weight silicon mattebox

bright tangerine is the way too! i have the misfit 3 stage mattebox myself, its light and sturdy, lighter than arri i believe. they are a UK company! the silicone version is called 'the atom/misfit atom'. its meant for steadicam usage or when weight is crucial to your needs, it weights only a few ounces... bright tangerine also debuted their new 'filter trays' at NAB this year, i believe they are shipping now, if you get any of their matteboxes, you should request for their new clip on filter trays, better to buy directly from their website since you can save more esp after 'brexit'.

+1 for bright tangerine. long intending to purchase one myself. been waiting for sales/markdowns, but seems they happen rarely. looks like a very well-designed and versatile piece of kit. interested in picking up their revolvr follow focus down the road.

not sure how to take advantage of this as prices are appearing for me in usd, negating the 'brexit' effect on the gbp or eur. good news is they haven't raised their usd prices post 'brexit'.

That's why I never check out of my hotel room without taking the shower cap! Always have a couple in my belt pouch in case it starts to drizzle. Great price too.

The outside of the Cine primes are 114mm.....so you can go with a clamping system (Arri, BT,etc) or a 15mm LWS rod mounted unit that either slides on & off or is a swing-away (Arri, BT, Wooden Camera, Chrosziel, etc)

What is the disadvantage of the extra lightweight atom?

the atom can only fit two filters, and since its like a rubber like material, its not like your traditional carbon fiber misfit mattebox, the atom mainly benefits steadicam ops and drone usage!

Well I do a lot of Steadicam work, and a C300 Mark II and Amira both have internal NDs, so perhaps two filter trays is all that is needed. What is the disadvantage of the rubber like material? Not as robust?

It looks like the Atom doesn't have clips for attaching flags, which would be a big disadvantage. It is relatively cheap, though, so I suppose it could be bought as a second matte box for Steadicam use.

Yeah, a matte box is heavier and generally bulkier than just a lens hood, but to say they don't offer as many advantages as a lens hood is backwards. I have three matte boxes: an old Vocas/Shade FX that I bought in the early 2000's and two Arri's- a big MB20-II swing away and an MMB-1. I rarely use filters, but use MB's all of the time for light/flare control. I have big top flags and adjustable side flags for both of them. I actually use the MMB-1 instead of the MB20-II with my "cine" stuff and have it set-up to work on rails and as a clamp-on, if I want. I can verify the MMB-1 will work with at least a lens as wide as the CN-E 14mm on s35. I believe it will also accept hard mattes.

The MB20-II is a top-notch, high-end matte box, but it is very heavy and obnoxiously priced. I bought it 5-8 yrs ago when business was VERY good. I doubt I would ever spend ~$5K on a matte box again. The MMB-1 is much smaller, much lighter and much less expensive. I had the MMB-2 as a loaner/demo while I waited on the MMB-1(had to be ordered from Germany and took forever. They may be EOL or close to it, I don't know), and I MUCH prefer the 1 over the 2. The 2 and the Atom are very similar, VERY shallow and not what I consider a conducive design for really controlling light hitting the lens. A friend of mine has had an Obox for years and he actually had to take a Dremel to it and route it out because it was vignetting on his W/A ENG lens.

The 15.5-47, like most of Canon's Cine lenses, including the 17-120, is 114mm front OD, which is what you're concerned with, not the filter thread diameter. Also, if you've ever priced OEM lens hoods(like from Canon or Fuji), they are ridiculously priced. Hope that you never lose one...

Arri can be expensive, but their stuff is built to last and actually be used day-in and day-out in working production environments and the world of rentals, so it should have no problem surviving a lone owner unless they just completely and purposely try to abuse or break it.

I was trying upload a pic of the MMB-1 on a 17-120, but DVX keeps flipping the picture upside down. I tried flipping it first to see if it would post correctly, but it still puts it upside down. Has anyone else experienced this trying to load images from their computer?

That bolded part was meant specifically in the context of "if you're not using filters," not as a general standalone statement. Sorry if I worded it confusingly. I meant don't offer as many advantages meaning, let's say a matte box offers, oh, random number, six advantages over a lens hood. Now, if you don't need filters, then you only have five advantages over a matte box, so...it then "[doesn't] offer as many advantages over a lens hood [as it would if it offered six advantages instead of five]."

Of course Canon Cinema zooms aren't necessarily ideal for run n gun or simple and quick work, but it may be nice to have a lens hood option in case I do want to use it for such work. Or if I'm just looking for something cheap to have in the meantime to protect the front element until I can afford to buy a nice matte box, which as mentioned, I plan to buy as well.

Arri LMB25 is very nice. It can be used as a clamp on, so its very easy to remove it fast. The LMB25 has a 3/8"' thread on the top if you need to attach something.

Even with no rod attachment, its rock solid. I use it a lot when shooting documentary with F55 and Cabrio 19-90. Its even steady enough that I hold it with my left hand when shooting on the shoulder.

Plus, all the sizes of backs are available so you can mount it to any lens in the world.
