can anybody please tell me if there is any way to keep the f stop on the canon a1 to stay open to its 1.6 when zoomed all the way in or do i just have to deal with it closing down to 3.4 when at telephoto.please anybody comment on this if you know or are eperiencing the same thing.thanks in advance for the reply.

That's the way it is with all cameras. You'll have to deal with it.

Only the 16x manual lens on the XL2 and XL-H1 can hold its F-stop through the entire zoom range...but there's some minor portholing at the long end of the lens with the iris wide open. Most lenses need to stop down a bit through the focal range in order to maintain resolution to an acceptable degree.
