About to purchase 7d for music videos and commercials and i wanted to know how which lens to buy? Also, whats the problem that i have heard about the lens that come with the 7d?

What i'm going for is a lens that gives:

1. Wide angles
2. Good close ups

UNDER $350 if possible

Well, people have had decent results with the kit lens (but you won't be getting too wide). It's just that there are better lenses out there.

I would take a look at the many threads regarding this. A 50mm is a great lens, but to be honest in your budget there isn't too much to work with.

Hm, actually some have mentioned having good luck finding Tamron 17-50mm 2.8f lenses for under $300 without the stabilization (which at the focal length isn't too much of an issue...but still nice to have, just a lot more money).

This is a pretty jumbled post, so I do apologize - basically to sum it up, your options are:

- Stick with the kit lens (it has stabilization, but the iris closes during zoom...also not very wide)
- Buy a 50mm 1.8 (great all around lens, but you definitely aren't getting much on the wide side)
- Go with a used Tamron 17-50mm 2.8 (no stabilization, sharp lens, iris stays constant throughout zoom)

Browse through the 7D lens forum some more,

The kit 18-135 isn't bad, for the kit price. It's fine, just a little slow. For sharpness in video terms, it's as sharp as you're gonna get; it's as sharp as a $1500 prime.

If you're going to get a 7D, consider the $1999 kit with the 18-135 lens, filter, and extra battery, it's a great deal.

And it's pretty darn expensive to get any wider than 18mm anyway. Unless you go with something like the Peleng 8mm, which is a near fisheye on the 7D.

Yeah I'd save up for some other primes down the road. There's no need to get everything right up front. Learn the camera with the kit lens and you'll have a better sense of what you really need.
