Lens Flares

Hey Guys,

Just a couple of quick questions.

I currently have an old Canon XM1 (I am looking at purchasing a HVX), and something that really bugs me is I get a awful vertical smear down the image as a part of the lens flare when I frame a shot where the sun is visible. Does this happen on all DV Cameras? The HVX?

Also, I am after some opinions of how the 4:2:2 colour space compares to that of 16mm. Obviously a technical comparison would be rather difficult, I am more after peoples opinions of how they see the difference in colour depth and the vibrancy of the image. I recently watched a short clip shot in 16mm and fell in love with the colour, a link here http://www.transgressionmovie.com/video/trailer1.html. Could the HVX compare to that with the right CC done in post? I have read many discussions on here regarding the film look and that the general consensus is that the majority of film look is achieved with the right lighting, framing etc. But I will be shooting mostly outdoors, like the above clip.

When shooting for DVD, I have already decided to shoot in HD and downrez to DVD for the final for a number of reasons. Is this also a better method for better colour reproduction, considering the 4:0:0 colour space of shooting in DV?

Sorry if these questions seem random or have been answered before.

Thanks for you time.

the hvx does have a smear.

16mm film is sharper and has more dynamic range as well as better color reproducion. the hvx and all HD cameras are far less grainy. with exception to maybe, 100 speed vision2 film.

Thanks.

Tim, is the smear very noticable? You wouldn't happen to have any screen shots would you?

Anybody know why this happens?

it is noticeable. But its kinda weird, i hardly notice it, im so used to seeing it DV. But i love ,lens flares, so i guess its part of my aesthetic

I love lens flares also. But this phenomena I am talking about I don't really like.

I don't get it when shooting with my digi still, and this smear is rather unsightly.

I've attached a pic to give a better idea of what I am talking about.

Do you guys know of any techniques to increase flare? I've played around a lot with this in a film I did but always felt like I wished I could have done more. We tried having two PA carrying lights by the camera rig and playing with 35 and 45 degree angles. My DoP was using a small HDV camera with the manual iris and focus on because we were shooting for that kind of look but I'd like to do some of that without the auto features on with the hvx.

Tim, do you push flare somehow without letting the sun play directly in your shot? I'm sure some of it is framing but maybe you know what I mean.

WEll i dunno, the HVX flares alot less than that though. but i also am usually shooting through a 35 adpater... I just realised they kinda eliminate that particular kind of flare...... Hmmm interesting......

I know what you mean. It's a very distinctive type of flare that really underlines that you're shooting with a DV-sized camera, as opposed to the blooming sort of flares you get with film and still cameras, which can look quite good.

Exactly, it's just shame that a shot that could look so nice is ruined by this smear. . .

Well that screenshot is from an XM1, but from what I hear the HVX won't be as bad as that.

Fingers crossed :)

In my experience, the HVX smears much more easily than the DVX, and the DVX produces much prettier lens flares when pointed at a light (or a light is pointed at or panned past the lens), than the HVX.
