Lens corner/border performance in Video

When you read lens reviews, one of the major criteria is corner/border performance. Many lenses are said to be sharp in the center, but have soft border/corner performance.

Does this matter for VIDEO on the 7D since the top and the bottom are essentially cropped off with black bars to make the 16x9 aspect ratio? I can't remember off the top of my head, but doesn't the 7D Still mode have a different cropping than the video?

Also, isn't vignetting less of a problem with video than stills?

Obviously it's nice to have the best performance possible, but while researching lenses for VIDEO use, does the corner/border performance matter that much?

Thanks

Bad corners on lens reviews are usually for full frame camera, 7D is crop so you don't see it, atleast with my collection of lens that has bad reviews on corners for full frame camera.

but what if the reviews are for APC-S specific lenses, and not full frame lenses? Do the bad corners still apply in Video mode?

Yes, but harder to notice cuz you are not looking at a still unless your shot is lock down, what lens are you talking about?

Final answer, it doesn't matter as much since video is lower resolution than stills. Whenever you read a review with samples, just download one and downsize+crop it to 1080p and look at the corners again.

That is not true, you don't crop the corner to downconvert to 1080P, you rescale it and if the corner at high resolutionis bad, it will be bad at 1080P.

You have to crop to get the right aspect ratio. Thats what I meant. If you go from 3:2 to 16:9 without a crop, you'll mess up the aspect. If a corner is bad at full res viewing at 100%, it doesn't mean it will look as bad downsized to 1080p and viewing the whole frame. Ultimately its up to the individual to decide what threshold is bad.

Most lenses out there have far more sharpness than can be resolved at 1080P by a pixel binning video sensor. Sharpness shouldn't be a deciding in factor in choosing a lens to shoot DLSR video unless you're a pixel nerd.

Look at the video by Nino Leitner in an earlier thread to see what you can do with a $100.00 kit lens.
