C100: Lens Choice for Canon C100

Eric, when you say stretch the 'budget a bit' i hope you are saying it in tongue in cheek cos last time i checked, the fujinon 18-85 is over $80k... that lens alone cost more than the alexa mini lol. anyway photoscout, if you intend to use the 17-55mm on both your cameras, i DO NOT think it will go on your 1DX cos its full frame, 17-55 is a EFS lens so i doubt it will fit, its made for crop sensor...

Fujinon has the 18-85mm T2.0 lens, which is about the same range but a whole stop faster than what you're wishing for. It's a bit more than $2k, but if you can stretch the budget a bit I'm sure you'd be all over it.

I used to do that stuff with Betacams back in the day, I paid $75k for my first one with another $30k for the lens. Those days are over for me though.

I just like the idea of you showing up on set shooting behind-the-scenes of some big budget Hollywood movie, going up to the big-shot DP, and asking what the focal range is on his measly $40,000 prime lens while you're filming his answer with the Fujinon 18-85.

I recall asking a producer once what camera he was planning to use for a low budget movie he was planning. He said it'd have to at least be a Red, because the behind-the-scenes team he was hiring was filming with a Red.

i don't know if 'showing off' on set with a fancy lens is such a good idea tho... shooting BTS means you gotta be nimble and not get in the way of the first unit/main crew... mounting a giant zoom lens will add extra weight, not to mention you need a proper rig if you plan to do handheld shots/plus you need a good tripod head/rods to support a long lens... and how in the blue hell are you gonna mount a fujinon on a canon body when canon C100 is all EF, and can't take PL lenses!

Yes, tongue was firmly planted in cheek, I got that.

The show I shot in Africa a few weeks ago, the crew went nuts over my DJI Osmo with the Z-Axis arm, everyone loved it, I let the camera ops shoot a bit with it and they fell in love with it. We actually shot a lot scenes with stunts and fights in tight alleys where I was too in the way with my shoulder rig mounted C100 and our sound mixer shadowing me and I ended up using the Osmo quite a bit because it is so small and unobtrusive. In daylight, the Osmo, with a variable ND was a handy tool. The best quality image is not always the best tool for every situation on set. Getting the shot and showing the fans what is happening is what's important. Shooting the BTS on a fancier, larger camera like a RED or Amira makes the whole package too obtrusive. In this respect, my C100 is even superior to the C300, it's smaller and lighter. I am a big believer in the right tool for the job. In situations like this, the crew was moving fast, we had lots of stunts and lots of crazy blocking so me darting in and out of the line of fire, being a fly on the wall was the best choice. Gotta stay out of the crews way, out of the director and ADs way, out of the stunt coordinator's way, out of the talent's eye line, it can be tricky to dart in and shoot :30 and then get out of everyone's way. It's a constant push and pull, you have be good to the crew and director and they make my life easy. Me and my sound mixer would periodically just step off of the set to wait a few minutes so that we weren't "always there", always in people's faces.
