lens care in the Tropics and general storage?

Hi,

I live in Long Beach, CA. where it's a very moderate climate and not too humid. I usually just leave my camera and lenses in my Lowpro backpack. Is this a good way to store them?

Also, I go to Central America 2x a year (Hot and humid as hell) for several weeks at a time. Should I just buy some Silica Gel bags and place one next to each lens and my camera body in the various sections of the backpack?

Obviously I want to avoid fungus.
