Leica SL

New Leica SL with an Odyssey7Q+. Record 10-bit Apple ProRes 422 in true 4K 4096x2160 or UHD 3840x2160.

The camera has one of the cleanest, quietest sensor's I have ever seen. Hardly any noise at all. Really quite lovely. The Log mode is unlike any other manufacturer's and we will have to develop an appropriate 3D-LUT with Leica for it, but that can be quickly accomplished. It's an impressive new entry into the field.

Is there any word on the dynamic range the sensor offers? (both in stills and video modes)

Mitch-

Out of curiosity what do you mean when you say "the log mode is unlike any other manufacturers"? Thanks!
It did not map the sensor in a way that looked similar to any other camera system. The blacks and the exposure in general seemed a bit raised, meaning that the curve would need to be aggressively applied on the lower part of the curve. In certain ways this is quite clever as the dark part of an image gets the fewest bits allocated to it. The internal video recording is only 8-bit so this Log curve could help reduce shadow banding.

I only spent a few minutes with the camera today so I didn't really have much time to analyze it. My point was that even the most aggressive presets in the Odyssey7Q+ LUT menu were fairly weak in bringing the gamma into range. But that's easily addressed once we get the specs worked out.

I did use our 12x pixel zoom to do some heavy pixel peeping and was quite impressed by how quiet the camera was. Very, very little noise. It reminded me of the Phantom Flex 4K, which is the cleanest, quietest camera I have ever seen. If you have $100K lying around you could do a lot worse than shooting everything on that camera all the time.

Size comparison with a7S
As I said, this thing weights as much as the FS5...

Seems clueless to me.

I love leica - my uncle used a leica professionally for three decades (the same one - it still works)

Leica made a functional tool for his job (shooting stills on film)

Functional tools for my job (shooting digital motion) do not involve 8 bit codecs or hdmi connections

Anyone capturing images somehow has a soft spot for Leica....no question....the skateboard video they put up looks pretty amazing and I was wondering about the 10bit external option.....
http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/ima...r16_3=100&normalization=full&widget=1&x=0&y=0
this shows how the sensor performs for stills....compare to the Sony sensor the same size, it does not look too good...
the body is a lot heavier then anything comparable, the lens is 5000$ and 2.5 lbs.....
and a combo with body, lens and external recorder is in the 15000$ range.....
the worst thing about it is that as a still shooter, I can get a better image for a lot less and so far Leica at least had the advantage of the best image but at a price....that seems to be history now....

All 8 bit codecs are not same. I use a Canon C300 with its 8 bit codec to earn my living. So hoping that the Leica SL when recording internally in 8 bits will be good enough. After all it is not a cheap consumer camera.

Some people here are comparing its weight and size with A7. Remember Leica is used in all kinds of situations including war zones. If I were to have one in my hand, then I would not have any qualms using it for self defence. :) The camera is said to be made with 2 blocks of aluminium. Despite the Volkswagen incident, I have faith in the made in Germany quality.

The Leica video showing the powerline grids look nice. Not many people here can afford it. These are professional tools and one has to see if this makes business sense to buy.

Like comparing a luxury car with an everyday sedan. One costs more and there are definitely differences. If you don't care about those differences then buy on price.

Do not judge a camera on specs. Wait to see actual images. There is a real difference.

i have owned leica (s) my last one was the digital M8 and i really liked the files....and i agree that there is more then specs but so far the still images do not compare well to direct competitors like A7II (which is a 1500$ camera) the sony looks sharper, seems to have more DR and cleaner high iso....i am not even going to mention the A7RII.....
the real reason i am interested is the motion side and what you have said definitely got my attention.....i would love to see how the external 10bit compares to internal 10bit from FS7....and i am talking about IQ, nothing else.....but again: if it is not better, what is the point? a bare SL kit with lens and 7Q+ is 15K, for the same or less i can get a FS7 kit (a lot less) or the F5+A7sII kit.....is the SL external output as good or better? i am not mentioning specs or options because the sonys blow the leica away....purely IQ?

Im not a fan of the C300 (for the price it was launched at) but that is a seperate chat.

Professional tool? That is what makes me feel it is so dumb. Professional cameras need to feed an image to the director via SDI, and if they rely on recording offboard codec HDMI is not professionally trustable either. I dont mind $500 cameras being not designed for professional use but above that price point this is not something I would take on a professional set.

I feel like everyone is just going crazy (including myself).

Who in the world would ever consider this camera for video? (especially with all of the other options that have so much more to offer for the same price)

if this provides a better 4K image then others, i am interested....but that is a tough thing these days and especially in this price range (FS7, F5,....)
i did not even really consider it to be a contender but if mitch says it looks really interesting, that is enough for me to get interested in it....
i went back to the still comparison (i linked to before) and it is surprising to me how soft the still files look....got some samples from the leica site which look great....grain looks very organic....but i definitely would not buy this as a still camera.....
