I really wish they'd pull a Nikon DF and stick the 1DX II sensor in a mirrorless body, then the crop would be less tragic.

At least the price is low. Otherwise, it is like a broken record. Typical Canon. Talk up 4k and DPAF in the press release and sort of leave out that the two can not be used together... Disingenuous if you ask me.

Oh my, I expected basically nothing and they still underdelivered.

Wouldn't expect anything different from Canon... see a hole... fill it!! Regardless of it overlapping other parts. Canon's mentality is that it's better to have 10.000 weak products than 10 extremely good.

Yes, but really, no PDAF in 4k mode? Not even good for vloggers then. They seem to be trying really hard to make a product that has no target audience whatsoever, except the badly informed and the deeply confused.

I don't think I've ever seen a company so afraid of cannibalizing their own higher end products. The engineers on their consumer products must be huddled in a corner in fear.

Canon should have built in all of the features missing here and charged more. They obviously are not concerned about re-gaining the lost market share to Sony, Panasonic and Fujifilm. And that’s okay, but frustrating for Canon fans. The only two things that keep me interested in Canon are the DPAF and the color science. Other than those two features, I agree, there are much better values out there from competitors.

This camera would have been a hot seller with 4K 60p, decent data rates and choices, IBIS, DPAF at 4K, headphone jack, C-Log/C-Log 3, clean, full sized HDMI output at $2,200.00, essentially a Canon GH5S. I've been testing the GH5S and it's a very nice camera but the AF is primitive at best compared to DPAF from Canon and the color science is okay but not Canon-level. Everything else about the GH5S is pretty great. Canon could build in all of these features without breaking a sweat, but that obviously doesn’t fit in with their strategy and this camera proves that becoming a legit player in mirrorless is not a priority for them. This camera is an "obligation" camera, built because Canon would look like antiquarian if they didn't offer a 4K mirrorless. We just have to accept that and look to other brands for those feature sets.

Would it actually be a better seller at $2200 with these features than at $800? Would it make more profit for Canon? I don't see that necessarily being true.

It would appeal to a very different market, for sure. Probably a lower volume market with higher profit margins. Whether the higher margin would be enough to make up the profit difference I'm not sure, but i'd guess probably not; there are a lot more casual shooters who'd pick up one of these at this price than serious shoots who'd care about the video oriented features that it doesn't have and would be willing to pay GH5 and 5S prices for them.

Honestly I never expected this camera to bring all the goods at that price. At best I hoped for a very minor 4K crop with DPAF.

My biggest issue with Canon is that they have a huge hole in their lineup between $1500 and $2500. Even if tomorrow they announce a C100mkIII that records 4K, you know that's going to list for $5500.
They could at least throw us a GH5 style camera at the $2000 price point and not worry too much about it hurting the sales of their higher priced items, because there are people like me who are never going to buy a $5500 camera. Just not going to happen. But if all Canon wants to give me are 1080p cameras or a seriously hobbled 4K camera in my price range, I'll just go elsewhere, like I have.

Your biggest issue is the "huge hole" between $1500 and $2500? Life has got to be good! =)

I'm not even sure there is a hole there....

This is tongue-in-cheek of course, but are you sure that's your main issue with Canon these days??

It's obvious that the slightly higher end prosumer market is there or we wouldn't have A7s, GH5, GH5S and X-H1 from Canon's competition. They all also make downmarket cameras in the M50's price range too but also step up to the prosumer models. Granted, it will be interesting to see how sales go on this camera, it is certainly consumer level cheap for what it is. The question that needs to be asked is, "Why not both?" Make this camera, sell the heck out of it but why not make a stepped up model for more money with better features/specs for the "Don't want a DSLR and don't want a C100 MKIII" crowd? Think of all of the new lenses they would sell to these buyers too. My point was, it would be child's play for them to come out with such a model from an engineering standpoint, they have all of the pieces, they just need to put them into the right bundle. But they obviously have no interest in doing so so we're left to wonder why not?

I agree, Canon ought to be able to address both market segments. I'm sure that the people who are looking at A7s, GH5, and XH1 cameras are a significantly smaller market than the ones who'd be looking at this one, based on its price. Naturally, it's also true that the aforementioned market is almost certainly significantly larger than the market for the C200/FS7 and... that new Panasonic camera with the random number model name. ;)

As for why Canon isn't targeting that middle tier in addition to the lower one, I have no idea. It's probably a bean counter based decision.

Yeah because I'm not buying any of their cameras. Several others aren't either as a result of that missing product in that range.

The irony of this thread/conversation is Sony is about to announce the a7III today, which is the perfect example of them filling holes in their own line up.

Should be a big one for them as it will be their first sub-$2K 4K full-frame mirrorless (rumored at $1899). The a7S is currently sub-$2K but that's after multiple price drops. [I'm guessing it will be superior to the a7S anyway with newer tech, super-sampling, more features, etc.]

As far as Canon...they know what they are doing and we'll only see change when the obvious happens; they are losing money and/or not making as much as they want to.

I was about to type a longer post about Canon but I really do not care because of the other, better choices in market. It is their loss or non-loss. I just know I have purchased a lot of cameras over the years and have still yet to buy a C-series camera. Probably never will but would have gobbled up a 5DMKIV and maybe some new lenses if they had just wanted to play ball. Instead I stay with my 5DMKIII for stills and have other Sony and the GH5 cameras for certain video tasks. You missed me Canon.

Canon takes a lot of heat, but it should also be acknowledged that they've done a few things first as well:

- First 4K DSLR
- First 4K/60p DSLR (Panasonic's mirrorless' didn't exist yet)
- First to have (regarding Panasonic and Sony) internal RAW recording with the C200 via Cinema RAW Light
- First superior AF system

Maybe more...but they simply aren't going to provide a GH5-ish camera for that kind of price, at least not yet.

Looking at the new specs of the A7 III and I think it may be game over in this segment, to a point. It's $500.00 cheaper than the GH5S. I dislike Sony color science but you can't argue with the feature set and value.
