LCD screen hood

Please suggest a hood for the EX-1 LCD. I need something to provide shading for outdoor shooting. I do not need a loupe, so I think the sock loop thingy is not what I'm looking for.

What do you use?

Thanks
Bob

You might think of this - they are coming out with an adaptor in 45-60 days that will fit the 3.5"LCD of the EX-1 but I am using this now for accurate focus and it is superb - like having the viewfinder of the EX3

You can put your eye up close to the LCD screen - adjust the lens to your eye and the LCD fills your field of vision.

Thanks. I really don't need a loupe, just the basic "hood." There are hoods on that site but can't tell which one is suitable for the EX1.

Thanks again

did you make some kind of spacer or do you just live with some of the lcd being cut off? i was thinking of getting one of these.

he said in his first post that the sock loupe is not what he is looking for....

Yes!

Thanks for the lead on the Hoodman. It gets very good reviews on the B&H site and I ordered one. Should be here in time for some outdoor shooting this weekend.

Exactly why I said that it ""looks like" it has two different set up options". From the images posted it looks like the sock comes off and it could also serve as an LCD Monitor Hood?

I just "live with it for now" - Hoodman promised to send me the adaptor when they get it in. The biggest plus is the adjustable good-quality lens. However, it's small size and the ease of taking it on and off are close 2nd and 3rds. The vertical dimension of the HoodLoupe is perfect - it is just the sides are cut off - but for purposes of focusing it is outstanding.

i played with the prototype spacer setup at NAB. it was cool. didn't cut off the lcd. however, it seemed that if you didn't have your eye centered just right, there was some optical distortion of the edges.

do you have this problem?

anybody tried buying a replacement ex3 viewfinder? i mean it's detachable and it has the potential of getting lost so they must sell a replacement. velcro it to a normal hoodman for the spacer and you have yourself an ex3 viewfinder.

I just got the new Sock Loupe from http://www.hood-pro.com/. I'm still playing with it to really guage if I will use it much.

You can't just take it on/off easily which feels like a real limitation in a situation you want to have a 'viewfinder' but also stand away from the VF & monitor the LCD. The EX3 can do with with the flip up VF option.

Positioning the lens is somewhat messy, it does move around as I feared it might, & it does tend to clip the edges of the LCD screen.

It can also take a little positioning to get proper focus on the LCD, if the lens is the wrong distance from the LCD, the LCD is out of focus itself...

It does fold away nicely though.

to be honest, the only thing that sways me from the sock loupe is it looks like a cirque du soleil cast member's hat.

call me petty but that thing is ugly....

yea it is a bit odd looking isn't it.

Another thing, because that top area is so big, it has a tendency to reflect your breath back up to the lens area and fog it up...

I didn't notice it but then again I have used the camera with it on for only a couple of hours - I just was so happy about being able to see the LCD so clear and large maybe I overlooked it - will look for it specifically.

Here is the info from Sony Parts (under Services PLUS)

It is called LOUPE, VF: Ref No. 206; Part number 178876611 List Price $172.26 and it gives a diagram of the internal parts.

Pardon my ignorance but does the PMW-EX3 Loupe come off althogether and the LCD viewfinder looks the same as on the EX1 or is is suspended differently? Do you think this assembly would fit on the EX1? However it is so bulky and large compared with the HoodmanLoupe + more expensive it might not do the trick.

I have also tried out the new sock loupe and, at least for my purposes it doesn't fit the bill - I could never get it focused properly (unlike the Hoodman Loupe) and it is so large and not easily taken on and off as you have found.

the ex3 has the same lcd but the outer casing is a bit different. it has a built in plastic hood. the viewfinder tube/loupe is attached to this hood via a hinge. so you can flip up the viewfinder to use the lcd as normal. you can also release the viewfinder and remove completely.

my idea was to take the sony viewfinder and put it on my ex1. since it would normally attach to the built in hood keeping it a couple of inches away from the screen, i would velcro it to the inside of my hoodman at the same distance.

at $172, i think it's a little steep for something that will be ghetto rigged. i think i will just go with the hoodman for $80.
