LCD not properly displaying color representation

Numerous times I am finding that my hmc will not display the proper color and/or brightness representation I am finding in my captured footage.

With color.. I will shoot something that appears perfectly white balanced in the lcd, but turns out it is tinted yellow

and with brightness.. something that looks like a perfectly blown out white background turns out to have some slight shadows.

Suggestions?

Yes the LCD isnt very accurate.manual white balance as much as possible and learn the zebras. i set mine for 105 for the high end 70 for the low. I'm pretty sure barry said you will still get some details in highlights from 100% zebras. So if you want it to be blown out with 0 detail it should be displaying zebras at 105.

The LCD sucks.

For white balance, learn to use the vectorscope. I know when I was fooling around with raising the color temps in the scene files, I would look at my subject in the LCD and it would look fine. Then when I used a production monitor it was way too warm looking.

i'll have to try the scope more....as i've been frustrated with reddish tones in post.
found that for me it was a matter of white balance, but if you can't see the effect in-camera, then its really hard to work around.

at least our lcd isn't as bad as the Sony V1U!! i tried to shoot on it recently and just gave up because i couldn't tell what the heck the image was really going to look like! the Panny lcd in comparison is gorgeous!

Bringing back this thread for just a moment. I too have noticed how off my LCD was in relationship to exposure. However, today I hooked up an external HDMI monitor, and used Barry's book to learn how to go in and tune the LCD brightness. I found that it matched the HDMI output when turned down by a about -7 (!) At that setting I lose the PLUGE pattern, which Barry states should be the most accurate...

While I KNOW that I usually try to use the zebra's for exposure control, does this sound 'normal' at all? Why should the LCD match the HDMI output (which does appear to be close(r) to the footage I bring into FCP or Vegas). This at least seems to be allowing me to judge exposure on the fly and get something that is more closer to the end product at shoot time.

has anyone else found this to be true? Or am I missing something that is just fooling me because of my ignorance?

I trust zebras. (I should make that tshirt) Black balance before every shoot. White balance is trust worthy for me, but the viewfinder is a more accurate representation of true white. Lcd always has true white with a slight bit of blue which the viewfinder does not demonstrate.. For me

In controlled situations I set the cameras WB to whatever the lights are with the 3200K or 5600K presets... Most of the time I'm not happy with the colors in the LCD... but I am really happy in post. Then you can slightly tweek it in post to make it perfect.

I never back balance (well did like once) :-/ No issues yet!

I want a I TRUST ZEBRAS shirt!
