LCD Monitor

I'm tight on budget and have been fishing around for an 5-7 inch LCD for my DVX100 for a short I'm shooting in about a month. I have the original DVX, so I'm mainly using it for framing.

I was looking at used Varizooms for about 200 bucks used. I'm probably not going to use my DVX anymore past this summer (or maybe even this project). I saw some used lcd4video monitors for even cheaper, but I know it's not going to be good quality.

I guess my question is- does it matter all that much with standard def? I've shot stuff using my LCD and viewfinder before and it usually comes out looking how I thought it would, except for the annoying overscan. Is it possible to buy a dirt cheap LCD just to use for overscan, or should I spring a little more for a varizoom (which I realize aren't top of the line either)? Would using a portable DVD player screen do better in this situation? I've also considered lilliput, but I've heard they cut off information on the sides (although this is in 16:9 mode).

i use a portable dvd player sometimes...but if u want something that u can upgrade to HD with and still cheap....here's an option. 7D users are using this alot.

thats the non touchscreen. get that one.

If u do a search u will see alot of people talkin about them if u want to see some feedback...but they use it with 7D so its more than adequate for the dvx, plus when u go HD u have something already.

Hey, Jambredz that actually looks like a great solution. Very cheap, and it appears to have all the cabling necessary for SD and HD.

This may be out of your budget, but the DP1 is very nice and offers reasonable color reference, good aperture/exposure monitoring and will allow you to grow into it.

I don't think any LCD for $200 is going to be any better than your camera LCD, other than it will give you a bigger display.

well the coollcd has much higher res than the dvx lcd...and as stated, many people are using it as a cheap solution for HD for applications. thats more than enough for a dvx. but dont take my word for it. Do a seach on this forum and cinema5d.com for yourself and see what people who ACTUALLY use it are saying. If is good for so many...then i dont see why not.

Well, I don't disagree that maybe a lot of people have used it and are satisfied with it for SD. I just thought it doesn't give him much of an upgrade path to HD. I did search on "coollcd" and there were four main posts I read through, and it appeared that for as many people who recommended it, there were just as many who didn't. Obviously, it's a way different price point and probably will be an improvement over the DVX lcd. Anyway, hope it works out if that is what he buys.

again...i said used for the 7D...which is HD. They also use it for the 5d markii and the hmc150. All HD cameras. So i;m not sure why the OP won't be able to upgrade.

Well, like I mentioned in my last sentence of the post, I've read on here (and seen pictures) that lilliput monitors actually cut off a bit of info on the sides.

Since I'm primarily buying this for framing with my DVX, it seems like a bad idea.

BUT...I am shooting this in 4:3 on the original DVX...and the lilliput displays 16:9, no? So maybe someone who has one can tell me if a 4:3 display would be shown in full on the lilliput or if it would be distorted?

****And my whole thing is, I know I'll probably need an HD monitor down the line, but since I can't throw down 1,000 bucks right now, I didn't want to invest a whole lot of money for an SD monitor that would be used once or twice...that's why I was wondering if buying an lcd4video cheapo would make that much of a difference from a varizoom screen.*****

Regarding framing, I'm curious to hear if Lilliput displays the full image or is there an issue with underscan?. I definitely need the full image. Been searching around and not finding a clear answer on that. If anyone knows more, please do tell. If it does not absolutely show the full image top, bottom and sides, thats a deal breaker for me.
Regarding aspect ratio, should not be a problem. That is answered in the specs on the coollcd link above.
