can you use an external SD monitor for the canon 7d? if possible, would it react slower because its sd not hd?

The answer to your question is yes and no. If there is no other option then by all means use a SD monitor. But in order to get critical focus, in order to see if your shot is noisy, you are going to need an HD monitor. You can get a Lilliput monitor for under $200/used. If at all possible, avoid using a SD monitor.

Maybe this is dumb but: I thought it doesn't output HD for live monitoring, only SD, so what's the difference?

I believe that both the T2i and 5D output in only SD during live monitoring.
The 7D on the other hand can output HD during live monitoring.

This is what I believe, I'm not 100% sure..

Its HD until you are rolling then it goes to SD. Surprisingly the lilliput is pretty good even in SD when rolling.

lilliput.com is having a July promotion on their 7" Display for the 7D. I just spoke to their salesperson and the model 669GL-70NP/C is on sale for $169.00

I'm reading up a bit more on it, but most likely will be ordering one for my 7D.

You can read the specs from their site for this model.

Thanks Capt. Jack for the lead.

Look into SmallHD. Coming out with a monitor in August thats around $800. Extremely high rez, and is going to take the Canon batteries as well. If you can't wait till then i heard the iKans are good as well.

I like the Marshall V-LCD70XP. Would have liked to get the 6.5 inch version which is higher resolution...model 651 something or another, but it is "really" expensive in my opinion.

I am a fan of the peaking and false color...not for an "end all" guide to focus and exposure, but as another "tool" by which to judge.

Regards,

G.
