LAX Time Lapse - 20D

If you liked Chronos, you should check out another Ron Fricke film called Baraka. It was filmed in 70mm and looks absolutely amazing.

Eshy, I'm glad that this has shown you something else that a DSLR can be used for.

Sirius, if I see it out somewhere I'll give it a look. I was kind of hoping that I could see some of those parts you were talking about on the web. I might be able to. I just haven't looked that hard yet.

Watched it a couple days ago. You are right - truely amazing stuff. Great music too.

hey really enjoyed your work. I'm about to buy a used 10d, i just cant affoard the 20d, but is there any reason that i wouldnt be able to do time laspe with the 10d? Anyone know? thanks.

Watson, I was just looking up the specs on the 10D and you could do some time-lapse stuff with it. The thing I was mainly looking at was how many frames it could take before the buffer got full. The answer to that is 9 frames, which is better than the Digital Rebel that I was using for the sequence of LA. I didn't look into any external controls for it but you should. If your doing time-lapse stuff its best if you don't touch the camera while your getting the frames. Also you could do time-lapse with almost any digital camera. Just the way I do it I need a camera that can handle more frames in its buffer and has more controlls than a Power Shot. In all honesty if I were you, I would wait and get a 20D. Because as soon as I started doing this time-lapse stuff with the Rebel I ran into the buffer problem. Its just nice to have a camera that can handle what your doing. But if you can't wait, get the 10D.

Drew....which Digital Rebel were you using?

According to Canon...the Digital Rebel XT can shoot 3fps in 14 frame burst mode. Are those not what you were able to get?

I mean...if you were only shooting one frame every 2 seconds.....why wasn't the Digital Rebel XT able to handle the task? Is the 20D with 5fps and 23 continuous shots really THAT MUCH BETTER?

Sorry to be asking so many questions....but I will be purchasing my first DSLR soon and I want to make sure I get the most bang for the buck. My understanding is that Digital Rebel is nearly identical to the 20D in terms of Megapixel rating, but has slower image processing chips in it. I guess I'm trying to decipher whether the 20D is worth $500 more than the Rebel XT. You understand I'm sure.

Reservoir, get the 20D. You will know where that extra $500 went with that camera. Just to clear things up. I was using the 300D for that first sequence of the LA traffic. I was not using the Rebel XT. The new Rebel looks like a really nice camera but if you want more fps and a larger buffer, that might be faster than the Rebel XT get the 20D. Don't get me wrong I really liked my Rebel 300D but for time-lapse stuff and for just a great camera I would get the 20D. Of course if money was no object I would get the 1D Mark II. That camera has 8.5fps...damn that's fast, along with a 40 frame buffer. But I'm happy with my 20D...for now.

Drew - Money no object? Go with the 1Ds MarkII - 16.7 megapixel 35mm full frame CMOS sensor - SWEET!!!!!!!!!!
It probably doesn't have the buffer capabilities of the 1D MarkII though.

Res- One thing I've noticed that I'm sure Drew has ran into even with the 20D is when you are doing long exposures, like say 1 sec., the buffer doesn't seem to hold as many as if you were shooting normal daylight 1/250 sec. exposures. If the Rebel 300 has the same problem I could see how there would be a buffer problem.

Here's the breakdown:
Rebel 300: 2.5 fps max 4 images
Rebel 350: 2.8 fps, 14 JPEG or 4 RAW frames
20D: 5 fps up to 23 JPEG images

As you can see there's a big difference between the three cameras in the arena. Other than that, there's really not much difference between the 350 and 20D.
You can see a side-by-side comparison HERE.

I'd say unless you really plan on doing alot of similar timelapse stuff like Drew, go with the 350. The differences are minimal. Don't get the original 300 Rebel though. There are big differences there.

Don't get me wrong Sirius, 16.7 megapixels is cool. But there's no way in freakin hell I would need that. I like fps and buffer size. Now if the 1Ds MarkII could do 10fps 50 frames at a wack then that would be worth the price of that camera. I mean there's money is no object and then there's over paying for something. Still a cool camera though.

I'm with you there Drew. These cameras are for totally different markets. The 1D is marketed to the sports/action guys that need the frame rate and the 1Ds is marketed to those guys with more money than brains or those that do serious print work and require the full frame sensor so thier lenses truely match up. But you said money no object..... so I'd get both!

I love my 20D but when Canon recently released the Rebel 20D and I did the side-by-side I was a bit pissed. Feature for feature there's just not enough difference to warrent the extra $500. (Unless as I stated above you are doing your kind of timelapse stuff.)

Well here's the thing....and maybe you guys can help me out. I do want to get the 20D. I shoot ALOT of concerts and having the 5fps would be nice. I'm also wanting to do some stuff like what Drew is doing.

....So anyways....back to where I need you guys' help.......

The retail price for the 20D is $1599 with lens. I really don't want to pay that for it. Dell keeps putting up 15 and 20% stackable coupons for Canon Digital Cameras, but I keep missing the deadline. I could have gotten it for like $1209 shipped but I missed out. Those coupons only last for like 2000 uses. We need an *eCoupon* thread or something to let each other know when stuff is REALLY cheap like that. I believe it was Sirius who "Stole" the Rebel XT for the unbelievably low price of $789? Somewhere in that range?

I seriously don't have time go scour every eCoupon website every day. Have you ever seen how many there are? Typically they *usually* do have most of the same coupons, but it's the fact that I just don't want to have to search for 20 minutes every day trying to find the "latest" one.

So any help in that regard would be appreciated!!

Help me get the 20D for a sweet price (1000-$1200) and I promise I'll make some phat timelapse stuff and track it with some awesome ambient music. HELP ME HELP YOU!!

Rebel 20D? You ment Rebel XT right. Just wanted to make sure because you never know with digital camers.

See I bought mine from B&H and paid about 2K for the camera, 17-85mm USM lens and that remote contoller. The lens was expensive but it kicks ass. The lens that I got with my Rebel 300D was kind of pissing me off, the 18-55mm. That's why I got the more expensive one, plus I had the money to blow. The thing that was bugging the **** out of me about the 18-55mm lens was the focus on it. But I don't have that problem now with the new lens. So that's something to think about when you get whatever camera your going to get. Sorry I can't help you out reservoir with the eCoupon thing. But it does sound like a good idea. I did get a $100 rebate from Canon for the camera.

Res - It wasn't me that bought the Rebel 350XT for cheap. I've got the 20D and is my first DSLR. I'll keep an eye out for you on the eCoupons but I wouldn't hold my breath. They aren't gonna let it go that cheap or it would hurt 350 sales.

Drew - You and I must have been on the same page with the 20D. I bought the 17-85mm lens too. I have a friend that has an original Rebel with that P.O.S. 18-55mm lens. It really is a POS. When I bought mine and he borrowed my 17-85 he went and ordered one the same day.
I also have this sweet baby too.:

The 70-300mm f4.5 DO IS lens. Sweet but not used nearly as much as my 17-85 that lives on the camera.

Why does the 18-55mm suck so bad? Is it just as bad on the Rebel XT (350D) ? Exact same lense I would guess?

~reservoir~

It's the same $99 lens. It's really ashamed that Canon even puts their name on it. Please trust us. You will not like the focus and aberration this lens produces. Canon sells it as part of their "packages" for mom or grandpa that doesn't know anything.
No offense to moms or grandpa's...:undecided

Woah,. I totally missed this thread! Again, some killer stuff! I love the planes landing and taking off! I can image what it would look like bumped down to 720 x480. You can seriously sell this stuff as stock footage. Why didn't I think of this.. Good stuff Drew!

yes I will also have to put in a reccomendation here. I havent used a Rebel or the XT version but I also own a 20D with a 17-85 IS lens. The camera is truly amazing. I am going to try some of this movie type stuff with this camera once all the rain stops. As a note - you should never skimp on the lens. It is almost as important as the camera itself. the 18-55 is garbage so just spend some extra dough and get the 17-85. You wont regret it.
