LAX Time Lapse - 20D

Okay so now I have my 20D to do this time lapse stuff with and boy is it easier. Plus the camera just kicks my Digital Rebel's ass. So I just went out tonight and got these three quick clips. I'm going to go back out there and get some more of the air field when I have the chance. It was kind of a pain in the ass to try and find a good place to get the shots. Hope you all enjoy it.

The DVX has half ass time lapse, however the intervals are not very useable since the minimums are far too high. It captures 0.5 secs of video per "snap" and I think the minimum time lapse between snaps is like 30 seconds. Having a snap of 1 frame would be great (but isn't really reliably possible with tape) and an interval time of 5 seconds would be awesome.

In the end, the DVX's mode is not very useable. I have found a script for Vegas though that will take running video and pull out single frames at a certain interval and it ends up working much better than the dvx's built in time lapse. Problem with that is you need LOTS more tape and battery to get the same result since you're taping nonstop instead of little pieces at a time.

That footage looks absolutely gorgeous Drew! Now I want a $1000 digital SLR!

I love this stuff. Very inspiring. Im picking up a nikon D70s on sunday. I can't wait to play around with it.

Luke

keep in mind you need a laptop to do timelapse on the D70.

Thanks for the comments. Yeah its too bad the DVX doesn't capture time lapse like this. Doing it this time was so much easier. I had a Timer Remote Controller to do this stuff with. Luke, you might not need a laptop to do this kind of time lapse. With the other ones of LA I only had a little IR controller. It was kind of a pain in the ass because you have to keep pushing it and counting your frames. I'm not sure what kind of stuff you can buy for the D70 but I'm sure they might have something to control the camera with.

Every time someone does something like this, I'm going to suggest having a DVXuser archived footage.

DOOO IT!

Hey John2, if you want to do stuff like this get the Timer Remote Controller. Its worth every penny. Also the 20D is amazing. Not just for this but also as a great still shot camera. I might go out and get some more stuff tonight at LAX and around town.

yeah, i checked out that Timer remote and will for sure get that. i'm getting the 20D to shoot surf, but really now into timelapse stuff as well.

post more stuff!

Drew - Is it the TC-80N3 Timer Remote that you are using? I read the specs on it and thought it would only do 99 frames. Does that mean you have to reset and start over every 99 sec. (assuming you are shooting 1 frame/sec.)?

I'll post some more stuff when I get it. Hopefully tonight when I'm coming back from work. John2, you live down in LBC. That would be a good spot to get some time lapse stuff. That city is lit up like a damn christmas tree at night. Word of advise, if your going to go out shooting by yourself bring a people repelant object with you. Like a sword or something.

Sirius, that is the remote that I use. I does only do 99 frames in that continuous shooting mode. But its really easy to get it going again, just press the start button at the end of it. I have a little problem using the timer, which I over look because it is so helpful. If I do a 2 second burn for each frame I only get 1/3 of that 99. So I only get 33 pictures. I just have to remember that when I'm using it. So to get the length of clips that I got. I to the capture thing about 4 to 5 times. Doesn't bother me at all. Push the button four or five times...or push the shutter 165 times. Which is more work...

I found a cheaper route than the Timer Remote if you don't mind being tethered to a laptop. It's called DSLR REMOTE PRO. The great thing about it is the full screen preview of your shots. And the timelapse capabilities. Just set the number of shots you want to shoot and the time between shots and hit start. Here's a screen shot.

I just downloaded the trial version that is fully functional for 15 days. Gonna give it a try in the next few days and see what I can come up with. May be worth the $95!

Hey Drew, I loved the first time lapse you posted in the other thread and this one is so much smoother. Since you posted the process of how you do this in the other thread I have a few of questions for you now that you have the D20.

First off, are you using the same settings you posted for the rebel or have you customized it for the D20 (and if so could you post em? I feel like experimenting for the hell of it :) ). Secondly, what time interval are you using? I mean the planes looked smooth as hell :). Also I noticed your shots are at night which gives it a unique feel. What times have you been going out at to do this?

Thanks a lot man, and keep up the good shooting, it's awesome... awesome to the MAX! :)

Also try this, guys.

I emailed them today to see how the D70s with its remote control port would interface with their products. Hopefully it will be seamless and awesome.

In terms of *Time Lapse*, what is the significant differences in the Digital Rebel and the 20D? I know, I know.....I could look it up on canon.com but I'm lazy. Also, let's say you wanted to use a *Canon* timelapse in your DVX film? Can you intercut that footage with DVX footage into a regular NLE like Final Cut, Vegas, Avid, Adobe? Just curious, because I've heard that the DVX more or less sucks for true time lapse.
