Last Call with Carson Daly

That's just sad.

And i thought the show was bad before i knew this piece of information. Not that there's anything wrong with the DVX, but come on...a daily TV show in 2009 using a dvx as a main camera?

There is obviously a very good reason. I take it as a compliment to the DVX being the "2000" look, or the underground look... something of the sort but certainly positive. He used two of them when they go out on location to cover up and coming bands, which is every night since he doesn't seem to have big writer's staff... guess they are being cheap with his budget. I like that he is changing the format of the show though. I think he would have a cool show if they let him do whatever he wants... which seems to be happening.

I think in his quest to be the underground music know all... which by judging the music he's been putting on I might say he is... (very cool music I never heard before!)... I think the production selected the DVX to give it that look reminiscent of the turn of the millennium... that's my opinion anyway.

Also worth mentioning:
These segments are always at night.
They do play with the image a bit in post, and personally I love what I see... I really dig the look of the DVX... good times...
They are using Lite Panels on camera LED lights.
I've seen two cameras, one often set to B&W in post.

I like the direction his show is going. It sucked so bad before the format change. Hopefully they keep up with the docu style shows.

Hmm...after reading this thread i went and watched the show and i'm happy to see that its different than it was before...not as bad. And yea I noticed the dvx's in the on-location things. They had an external light attached.

I don't think they use the dvx in the studio though, right?

I wouldn't be so quick to condemn any program for using the DVX. It's a champ of a camera, and in this day and age many daily programs are suffering for budget. They do what they can with what they have. Even some well-known soap operas are shooting on miniDV now (and somehow, the acting still sucks).

But even if budget's not a big concern, directors will choose cameras based on what they know they need and can use to get the best image for the program.

Alton Brown, who is the golden child of Food Network (and rightfully so), used the DVX on his "Feasting on Asphalt." That is one of the best-produced programs that I have seen in a while. And he's not exactly strapped for budget or resources.

Well last night they shot him with DVX's at a skate park, using the Lite Panels, but they also had 4-5 Nikon D90's used for a concert. Again the music was excellent... but this time the concert looked fantastic. I am not 100% it was the D90 but it felt like 24fps.

The grading and other graphics/VFX (transitions) were fantastic. I might have been a bit bias because the performance of the band was phenomenal but the video had a great indy/docu HH style to it...

i'm surprised anyone watches that program the guy was a real dick back in the day, and a tool.

and doesn't the d90 only shoot video for like 5 minutes or something? something about its EOS. still a neat camera

It might be the cannon at 30fps... I don't really know much about what's going on with the DSLR's really.

I don't really watch the show, but we almost always watched Conan, like every night, and he is right after. Jimmy Fallon's show is good to. You might be surprised, I never watched TRL, but he seems pretty chill now.

Yep.
Right now these DSLR / Video cameras will run hot after a short time plus they have not come up with a way to deal with the FAT32 4 gig per file size limit.
So Nikon and Canon and I would guess all other makers of DSLR/Video cams are keeping the record times down.

They are re-aired the show with the Cold War Kids performance tonight, the one shot on DSLRs. They look too small to be 5D's... they looked to be definitely narrower than the Lite Pannels.

I did however notice they had TONS of focus issues that I didn't remember in the little back-stage pre-show tidbit.

Last night I caught a glimpse of the show and finally got identification... there wa a canon lens on the DSLR... they are using the Canons.

So Carson Daly changed his show from a talk show format with crappy E-list celebs to now on-location underground music show?

Honestly, it is a much better show. his music has been good so far and some of the comedians too. My girl always falls asleep with the TV on, not allowed to turn it of under mortal threat. I hear it from upstairs and I've been turning it on on my TV to see what he shoots it on.

It was his 1000th show last night! No celebs.
