Large Hadron Collider

Yeah I'm a little bitter I didn't awake this morning to hear of a viral outbreak that is rapidly spreading across the planet.

Sigh ... one day I'll get my zombie apocalypse dream to come true.

It didn't create a black hole yesterday but it did make for an entire day without me on the forums.

if what you say is true, there has been a rip in the spacetime continuum. now i'm not sure if i'm still in the original universe or a parallel one.

^ It happened.

I wonder if I can fly? I'll go jump off the roof and I'll let you guys know when I get... if I get back.

I would love that movie if it explored the dementia that would also spread like wild fire. You know, give it a psychological aspect. But certainly all sorts of sci fi justified carnage and mayhem too. And to make it crazier we could have people looting gun stores and shi*... running around with machine guns, and maybe a flame thrower or two... :D

Well... who knows, maybe it happens this weekend. If anyone hears that a black hole is swallowing the planet, pls send me a PM so I don't miss it.

I take first dibs on being played by Sameul L Jackson as the "I told you, we all gonna die b*tch; now leave me alone and let me eat ma sandwich" scientist guy.

HAHAHA! perfect. But the woman needs to be really bitchy or you might offend women and never work again.

For some reason I read that quote in the voice of Arnold Schwarzenegger. :)

Oh, and uga, it is true. I didn't turn on the computer once yesterday. I was up at eight and out of the house 45 minutes later (which was much too late, I might add) I walked into class literally one second before the bell rang and stayed in town until late because of the football game. By the time I got home I just went to bed.

Reminds me of The Quiet Earth.

All of humanity will vanish into an alternate dimension, except for the very few who just happen to be posting on dxvuser at the moment of energization.

at that moment we would become part of the server and we'd be traped here for all the eternity........so nothing would change.:)

I call the thumbs up smiley as my new incarnation!

Hurry, call 'em! Don't be the bozo to get stuck with :zombie_smiley:.

When the first steam engine train came on line years ago the big buzz claimed that anyone who rode it would die because the human body could not withstand speeds greater than thirty miles an hour. Similarly, when the atom bomb was about to go online the big buzz was that it would set off a chain reaction and the world would explode. This Haldron event will come and go and life will go on as usual. If you need something to fear it is the economic forecast in the next year or so. I was a tech on a show a couple of nights ago where prominent financial advisers were in agreement that the coming depression (2009- 2012) would make the last great depression look like a cake walk. Just my .02

I had a small headache yesterday and I'm pretty sure it was caused by the collider. Tell them to stop.

I agree with Mino. And Y2K was another example of something that never panned out. Sure it makes for exciting news but the predictions never come true.

With the cost of food sky rocketing in under-developed areas of the world the collider and smashing atoms is the last thing we should be focusing on. The global economy is starting to hit the fan and if we don't stop focusing on the bright shiny things it's only going to get worse. ....Which is a prediction I hope doesn't come true.

I agree with what you two are saying...to an extent. Yes, it is true that hype is created and often generates more insecurities than necessary. That being said, you can't generalize every possibly catastrophic event this way. Regarding the train: because science wasn't as developed as it is now, people didn't know that human bodies can withstand speeds even up to 200 MPH. And, while it may be true that we are afraid of the collider because we are not advanced enough to know it is perfectly safe, it is also possible that we could be wrong.

So, let me pose a question to you: in this situation, can we afford to be wrong?

If you ask me, the answer is no. My life and the lives of every other human being are not worth some data that we won't be able to evaluate if we are dead anyway. Then again, that's just MY two cents.

IMO The collider is a 27km hole in the ground that billions of dollars are being thrown into. Basically some scientists convinced the government that all that time and money should be spent on unlocking the key to the universe when they could have easily used that time and money to solve the food and energy crisis.

Back when the US was looking for a way to win World War II the government found the brightest scientists and placed them all in a secret base in New Mexico. Within 18 months they had created the atomic bomb. Imagine what could be done if we got the brightest scientists in the world, threw some money at them, and said, "You have 18 months to fix it!!!" No more AIDS. No more dependency on oil. No more pollution. Who knows what could happen.

In other words, unless the collider is going to cure cancer or feed the hungry, then the time and money used for it could have been better spent. We need to get our global priorities straight and fix the problems we have now, before going off in search of the Big Bang. I'm not saying we shouldn't ever try. I'm just saying lets clean-up our house first and then go outside and play.

That would coincide with a kontradieff wave bottom around 2011.
