Laptop...

I'm looking into purchasing a laptop so I can review footage on location.

I remember reading somewhere on this forum that one can get a laptop with p2 card slots right in it, for easy P2 tranferring + sorting.

I'm asking which laptop has this and which is powerful (example: a mac pro quad core...) enough to handle 1080p HD footage with color correction rendering (in FCStudio's "color" program) etc...

also, how much GB (I know there's never really too much) is needed for HVX 1080p HD footage and color correction on the same computer?
I can get one with 4GB (plus I have a 500GB external Harddrive), that should be okay, right?

I've searched the forum and can't seem to find the exact computer I should be purchasing (I"d need it to be a Mac. ..long story)

sorry for the simple question.

If you require it to be a Mac, you're out of luck. No modern macs offer the P2 slot.

If you want an easy workflow for field ingest/archive etc., you can go with a cheap Windows box for that.

If you want to run Color and edit FCP in the field, you'd need a Mac. But the Mac doesn't have the slot. So about the best you can do is get the Duel Adapter and a Macbook Pro.

Thanks for the quick reply, Barry.

Where could I find this "duel adapter"? I searched BHphotovideo's website for "duel adapter" and "panasonic p2 adapter" and variations of that and found nothing that would act as an "in the field p2 slot for a mac book pro"

For cost, reliability, and compatibility reasons, I strongly suggest buying a cheap Windows PC instead of the Duel Adapter. You can find options starting at $300.

Also, ask yourself if you really need to be using Color or other apps in the field. You can get more bang for your buck if you get a workstation instead of a laptop.

i was going to get a mac laptop, but realized for what i wanted would cost about $3k

so i just bought a pc laptop for about $550, lots of space, fast processor, etc. just need the duel adapter to offload the card now.

So, why can't we take the AJ-PCD20 P2 Drive, which provides 5 slots.

At $400 per slot, just eliminate four of them and you have a FW reader at $400.00

Bingo!!!

Just kidding.

I bought a Dell Latitude D531 for $900 a year ago and use it for P2 data management, Adobe OnLocation, editing, After Effects, and green screen work. I get 3-4 hours from each of two batteries. I use an internal drive to keep things simple and then back up to the network when I get home.
If you stick with Windows, I suggest 32-bit XP for simplicity.
