Laptop for field dumping and review

I've decided to get a new PC laptop for field offload and review. other than that, I DO NOT use laptops for editing or anything else other than offload and review!
(my old one has only usb and a small HD)
QUESTION: what do you recommend? I know it needs pcmcia.
I would like it to do the following:
1) offload p2 footage from slot to firewire drive (faster than USB).
2) Playback p2 footage FROM firewire drive to CHECK IT it before deleting p2 card.
Do I need fw800 or is 400 good enough? it wont play from my usb connection of course.
Just use p2 viewer?
Any brands and configurations welcome. I don't want to overspend, but i want it to work!
Thanks all.

Any Windows laptop with PCMCIA and firewire should do exactly what you're asking for. Install the free P2 Viewer software or P2CMS and you should be able to do what you need.

You don't need FW800 and in fact it's nigh unto impossible to find a Windows laptop with FW800.

Yeah, u don't need fw800 but make sure you get one that has the fw400 port. Much faster then usb 2 when transfering large files.

Also, if u want the fw800 port then grab the new macbook pro. I just picked one up and I'm in love.

My computer can't see the card when I put them in the slot. Any idea why? I can dump the footy with HVX connected to the laptop but the computer does not see the cards. It makes a sound when they are put in and taken out though.

I've just got an old Macbook G4 Titanium to offload my P2 cards, thing is I got just 512 RAM... I guess I have to boost it a bit... It can only go up to 1G though, would that be enough?
