Landscape Footage from Montana

haha, Ian, you are a student in 104, yes?

Oh, what a small world. We must talk shop about the A1. I'll see if I can find you in class today.

Haha... indeed. Benji, I'm assuming? I saw your posts over at DVinfo.net leading up to your purchase. What a beautiful cam, eh?

Yeah, totally stoked. Find me in class today, I have a suggestion for uploading files to the web. I'm still downloading your file right now but it's a monster. ;)

Barlow Elton graciously tutored me on the very fine art of web encoding with H.264.

Yep, I assume you're a Mac user?

This is great, we need to evangelize the gospel of the A1. Our school is filled with ignorant kiddies who like to talk smack about HDV when they're obviously clueless and incompetent. A lot of them are my friends. ;)

How nice of you to have found each other. Now fess up and tell us the secrets of encoding by Barlow Elton! :)

401MB's? Wow. Let me know when you get a smaller version out. I love checking out nature stuff, but 401megs?

Jason
Yeah, it's huge. As I said, I'm still learning the ins and outs of compression HDV.

Indeed.

That was a huge file, but worth the wait. Thanks for sharing, Ian.
Thanks, Elton. Conversing with one of your pupils right now on the ins and outs of MPEG StreamClip for HDV. Once I get it all figured out, I'll post a much smaller version for those of you with less patience.

Nice landscapes. I noticed your footage had some kind of shimmering to it. You know what might have caused it? I havent seen that before in my own thats why I ask.

You mean that the footage wobbles (yet another definition for wobbling) like hot air would do if you film something like a highway? I noticed that too. At first, I thought it was due to hot air indeed, but then I saw the same effect during some water shots and shots with snow...
I think it's due to compression.

It's actually present in all the long footage, even before compression. It's the shimmering of a temperature gradient, like the air over a hot highway surface mixing with the less hot air. Only in these shots, it was cold air (over the water and snow) mixing with the warm spring air. Kinda cool, never was able to se it so clearly until now.

Yeah, that's the volatile atmosphere of high elevation Rocky Mountain terrain; no more, no less.
