Lamborghini Gallardo

Recently I shot and asked for suggestions how I should complete a video of a 68 Camaro. As scheduling worked out I ended up shooting this Lamborghini before resuming the shoot on the Camaro so I incorporated many of the suggestions you guys made for the Camaro.

I do this as a hobby, that's not to say that I don't want it ti be as professional as possible but its mostly just me, my wife and the 7D.

I hope you enjoy this.

Thanks

The video is very nice! Pro looking. It's very long, too long but it's nice indeed. Were you using a jib?

I envy you though. Lovely car, home, neighborhood, supportive wife and nice camera lol. Happy shooting :)

I have a collection of cars that will eventually be edited together in sort of a compilation reel so although the video maybe just as long the amount of time spent on each car will be less, this was just the first car.

I'll probably just keep doing one car per song until I get enough shot for now.

I have a DIY jib that didn't work as well as I would have liked. after taking into account what I learned on this video, the jib is now "new and improved" and worked much better on the Camaro video.

Thanks

Definitely a great car. You took the suggestions under consideration and it shows. I agree with Jay however, with the video being too long. Love the ending shot!

Kegan

EDIT: Now, I get why you're shooting so much. Keep up the good work!

So thats what happened to my car?? Give it back please!!! Well done..and yes a bit long.

Great professional looking video from a "hobbyist".

I'm new to the DVX community, but have been doing audio editing for years. Given the only complaint was it was too long, I'd be happy to take an audio clip and shorten/lengthen it to a specified duration of time with seamless edits.

I realize most on this forum probably have resources in place for this kind of thing, but just in case...

PM me if interested. When I get my HPX170 I'll be buggin' all of you with stupid questions so consider this a preemptive "Giving back to the community".

I have made a few videos of my cars, I prefer a faster paced video (probably because i'm ADD) I have shot mine more Top Gear style, also something that will make it much better is audio of the engine, even if it's just for a few seconds of it accelerating it'll get your blood pumping, buy two shotguns with wind jammers and a Zoom H4N, use one for the exhaust outside and one inside the engine compartment (you get a high pitched wine from one and a roar from the other. Filmtools.com has some good camera car mounts that can also be used to mount the mics. If your wife doesn't want to drive fast then you need to while you are getting shots of the tach redlining, shifting with the paddles etc.

Top Gear uses a lot of digital filters in post, they are easy to do: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hovbx6rvBaA

Also build a ZaZa slider, build a longer one about 4-5 feet instead of a short one.

It's nice. The shots are nice. But honestly the song is a terrible fit in my opinion and the editing is too slow. The whole things feels way too laid back and old man-ish. Which I think doesn't fit the type of car at all.

The pacing and the type of shots, along with the song selection you have would be great for a movie sequence where your characters are crossing the US on a journey somewhere. You show shots like this of them in a convertible with their hair blowing and them smiling and laughing.

But an actual Lamborghini commercial should looke like this:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vrxdOhbxxHc&NR=1

Fast, raw, modern, electronic. Showing how the car actually roars like a lion and/or how high tech and advanced it is.

It reminded me more of a video for a Cadilac than a Lambo. If your bitting your teeth right now no worries, this can all be done in post. Watch as many videos of Top Gear and study them, it's one of the highest rated shows in the world for a reason.

awesome video!!! how exactly did you get those aerial shots? someone said you used a jib but were you in another car with the jib?

also if you don't mind me asking, what do you do for a living? you have a gorgeous home and and a car i drool over ahah

A couple of thoughts, first, thanks to everyone who provides feedback, that’s why I posted it. My reply is not meant to be argumentative, I just want to point out a potentially different way of looking at this. I really do take into account all feedback and try to incorporate it in future projects, so in that regard your feedback is very valuable, whether I seem to agree or not.

Roxics, you said something that cracked me up, “The whole thing feels way too laid back and old man-ish,” I am an old man that probably explains a lot. Also I’m not trying to make a Lamborghini commercial, they have plenty of money and can produce their own.

I will say this though, I think the commercial example you provided is probably largely ineffective, this car is an absolute joy to drive for none of the reasons in that ad. I couldn’t care less about folding mirrors, seeing the tach go to red line etc., there’s so much more to owning and driving this car than how fast and powerful it is. Not to say that I didn’t enjoy the ad, its just if your going to spend $250K on a car its obviously going to be fast, powerful and loud so that ad didn’t tell me anything I didn’t already know. You could have replaced it with any number of cars and it would have been exactly the same ad.

I totally agree with you about the audio, I just don’t have the equipment yet to get it right. Something I’m definitely going to work on. This might date me a bit, I originally was going to edit this to “Welcome to the Machine” by Pink Floyd. Watching the top go up at the beginning of the song was great, but overall way too slow. I even have a version edited to a song from Willy Wonka and the Chocolate factory - sometimes I just crack myself up. My wife wouldn’t let me show it to anyone...

What music would you suggest?

ChipG, this was the first of many more “car” videos that will hopefully get better. As you might imagine I’m a huge Top Gear fan and the episode about the Gallardo was the best. But keep in mind that it is produced by the BBC with an entire crew and honestly I think Jeremy Clarkson makes that show what it is. I have seen so many shows here in the States try the same formula and it doesn’t work at all.

I’m not really trying to produce car commercials or emulate something like Top Gear, I wish I could, I’m sharing what I’m doing in hopes that if I can incorporate the feedback I get it can evolve into something better and a little more unique. I’m equally happy to share with anyone what and how I’m doing this.

What’s a ZaZa slider?

Strobe Media, sometimes I’m almost embarrassed to admit how I do things. I used a DIY jib in the driveway and tried to mount it in the back of my pick-up, but the 7D is very sensitive to vibration and it didn’t work as planned. So I put a rod on the roof and slung a bungee cord from that to a sling I made for the camera lens. It worked great as far as the vibration goes but required quite a bit of practice. I’ve since built a little more elaborate rig to provide better control.

Colonel Panic, like the name... Be careful what you ask for because I might certainly take you up on your offer. Thanks for the offer.

Thanks again everyone and I definitely look forward to more suggestions.

P.S. I forgot, for those of you who might have watched the link to Top Gear from ChrisG, not only does this Gallardo have 195,000 miles of head room it DOES have the flappy paddle thingy...

This video transfers quite well how the car is hurting.

But I see what you are saying. It is hard to make a cool video if you are on your own. Someone must do great driving (you?) and someone else must move the camera (you again?). This leaves you to the shots of the car sitting on a parking lot, and to not so engaging driving shots. But I do appreciate that you made the shots of the car in motion at all, and apparently you used some suction cups for shooting off the side, and you used another car. With all fairness, this is a good effort. Speed it up and ditch the blah music, and it will look cool. Add some engine sound too.

P.S. Watch all the seasons of Fifth Gear too. The anchors may be not as engaging, but their cinematography is as good as on the Top Gear, and their test track is much nicer.

No Lanborghini's were hurt during the filming of this video...

Probably one of the biggest challenges to going a lot faster is figuring out how to reduce the vibration. It would be great to have a nice camera car or camera stabilization rig but since I don't that kind of relegates the camera's movement to about 40 MPH. However a simple solution to this is just put the camera on a tripod and haul ass past it...

Thanks I will certainly check out Fifth Gear.

Here's an example of a completely different way to think of a car advert:

Boxter

That was very well done, expensive no doubt. However, I'm not making excuses. I liked that approach much more than showing cars hauling ass and drifting around corners etc. I'm sure if you look there's car commercials like that for a Ford Pinto...

This ad had a story which my video doesn't have either.

Thanks for sharing.

Or, you can put a brave operation in the outside turn, and let a brave driver swing around, with roard, and powerslide. It does not have to BE fast, it has to LOOK fast. Hairpin turns are not really fast, it is acceleration what matters. But again, if you are to do the sliding, then your wife has to do the shooting. What if you slide too far? Disaster. And if you don't have anyone to leave a 3-year old with (like myself), then chances of shooting your own drop-top in a Top Gear style are getting really slim (I have the MR2 Spyder).

You can hire a professional driver and shoot it yourself, but it won't be you in the picture. Or you can drive it and hire a professional videographer, but you won't be having fun shooting. This leaves you with a nice looking but rather lukewarm video. Check and mate.

There are probably things you can do to spice what I'm doing up too. I don't think its so mutually exclusive. I'm not totally opposed to breaking the speed limit a little here or there but there's no way I'm sliding any expensive cars around corners.

I try to stay out of the picture as much as possible, its hell getting old and fat. :undecided
