Lackluster colors

I noticed that XH-A1 colors is lackluster compare to DVX100 and the HVX200.
XH-A1 owners: your comments plesae

The pannies have the nicest colour reproduction of any of the prosumer cameras IMHO. The thing with the XHA1 is that you can really bump up the colours using a couple of the presets floating around these boards (VividRGB is the main one I believe).

It will never look quite as nice (to my eye) as the HVX, but the HVX is working in 4:2:2 colour space compared to the 4:2:0 of the XHA1 so that's to be expected. So the HVX has the upper hand in terms of colour, but the Canon is sharper (it has higher native resolution CCDs). Both are good cameras either way.

yeah, with factory settings the a1 produces very, very muted colors.

but with a good preset and a bit of cc in post you can get nice colors. i'm happy with my results.

Your opinion and fair enough, everyone has different tastes.

That doesnt effect the colour saturation.

Nasser checkout the presets you can bump the colour levels way up from the out of the box look.

i tend record flat with my a1 so that i have a nice amount of headroom to play with colors in post.i think you can get what ever color you need in finalcut pro.

Exactly, I'm always struck by the how the perception of the stock results of the A1 compared to, of course, the HVX, tends to be any kind of factor at all in preference.

Even a marginally skilled color correction can make flat, raw footage look as saturated as your average MTV music video.

And I am also under the impression that Canon records flat for this purpose, so that you do not loose details in the highlights or shadows and can push to your preference in post. They tend to do the same on their pro SLR still cameras.

actually, shooting flatter is very smart move, when we talk about levels, however when it comes to color, it is better to boost the saturation in camera, record to tape with the compression, and then lessen it in post, rather than boosting in post.

hear, hear PaPa. Like Film nice saturated colors on camera are easier to take away than they are to add. MY old XL's were very flat. I always had to adjust my white balance to compensate for that!

The HVX has some great colors right out of the box compared to the A1. I really love the image of that camera and I loved the image of the DVX as well. I think the flat image of the A1 can be adjusted and get close to the HVX, but I still think "in camera" the HVX has the edge. If you go post production, then you can tweak the A1 image to pretty much the way you want it to look. On a side note, you can add to the image in post, but you cannot add more resolution as easily. So there are pro's and cons. I would rather have more resolution to work with and tweak in post personally. But, the HVX image is a great one, no question about it.

I was really curious about that too because I knew that I was having to adjust the flat image in post but the resolution was spectacular... Didn't really know why...

I likened it to an un-color corrected film scan that looks really flat...

for me the resolution is way more inportant and there's no secret tht the canon is tops in that catagory.on the other hand,i've owned the dvx and like all thought the colors were fantastic but after a good color corection abd converted to dvd my wife who knows little to nothing about these cameras wanted to know why the colors and detail on my canon look so much better on dvd then my old truty dvx.i think it all comes down to preference and if you need istant gratification.for me i tnd to be a visionary and contenplate what colors i'm going to add in post.
