Lacie Rugged Drive, Tekkeon battery, dump device

So I just picked up a rugged drive and had the idea to power it with my Tekkeon battery. With this setup, I now have a completely portable dump device. My only concern is not being able to check the footage after it's dumped to the drive. Anyone run a similar setup? what are your thoughts on not being able to check the footage on a laptop?

Ya, just use the usb power cable and the drive fires right up!

I'm dumping a full 16gb card now, and with varify on, it's taking about 25 minutes...

So you're powering it through USB, but offloading through firewire? And the drive allows that?

That's pretty cool actually.

As for verifying footage, this is one thing that people point to for saying they don't like offloading without a computer. But I've done it a dozen times or so, with the "verify" option, and never had an issue so I feel pretty confident with that. It just takes a while to verify, is all.

That's some pretty crafty thinking there, to use the Tekkeon...

I'm actually powering the drive with the USB power cable. The usb end goes into the battery, and the other end goes into the drives power outlet. I coudn't get it to power up by using usb going into the drive. But, the way I have it now, the battery is just supplying power leaving the usb and firewire ports open on the hard drive.

This should work with any other firewire drive also. The rugged drive needs about 5 volts dc to power it, and the tekkeon can supply up to 19. So this could be a very cheap solution for people looking for a portable offload system.

How well does the Lacie Rugged Drive handle writing to it and stuff.

I heard people say u need at least 7,200rpm harddrive to offload p2 files?

This would be great for me. Sometimes I shoot for 8 hours straight needing to break to go to my computer and offload. I could just offload in the field.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16875999294 would this work? says it outputs 5volts
