So here is an odd one - does anybody know if, theoretically, it would be possible to use an LA-7200 anamorphic adapter (72mm) on a 16:9 XHA1 (72mm) to achieve 2.35:1 - or is the LA-7200 only functional on native 4:3 cameras? Thanks!
Yes that'd work, but you'd have very limited focal lengths you could use. And what would you display the footage on? If you're unsqueezing for web usage it'd probably be fine, but for television... no benefit.
Why would you try and squeeze the image with an adapter when you have a nice 16:9 image to begin with...and 2.35 guides that you can have overlay the LCD so you can frame properly? Not sure the benefit of any other option really.
And if you ever needed what you shoot in 16:9, it'd be at a slightly lower resolution. Compared to 2.35:1 being slightly lower resolution if you shoot 16:9.
But if you're shooting for a print to film, you could use it I guess. It'd be a littler higher resolution than 16:9 cropped to 2.35:1.
And then you would need to consider the question of whether the dvx anamorphic adapter degrades the HD resolution by it's own optical performance. It's possible that it will look fine, but then again it might soften the footage to some degree so you'd end up with 2:35:1 footage that's no sharper than cropped 16x9.
Thanks for the advice - I was mostly curious because I wasn't sure whether it was worth it to sell or keep my '7200 when I purchase an XHA1 - I thought perhaps there was something interesting that could be done with it. Much appreciated!
