LA-EA2 AF Test

Here's a test of the LA-EA2 at Auto Focus. It's great but I wish you had the option to set it on spot focus for better control. Also, if you are in AF, the adapter will default to a f3.5 opening. It can't be controlled. In short, you have no choice. You either go for aperture control by setting the AF to manual or go Auto Focus at f3.5 default setting. Conclusion: Auto Focus is a great LA-EA2 feature but you will need to control exposure with a vari ND.

LA-EA2 +alpha lens is not working like kit lens 18-200 . So if I change aperture to f4,f5 etc. autofocus is not working . I am very disappoint .

For what I shoot, the 3.5 isn't an issue. A nice dof will look great. I would think that with a future firmware update, it may be possible to change the aperture. However I'm pretty clueless.

Yes but I wish to have control ,otherwise f3,5 sometimes seems too soft and I just do not need so much dof.

future firmware update, it may be possible to change the aperture
I do not think so but never know . LA-EA3 might be do this things . That what I wish to get + stabilization . LA-EA3 might be real -very smart adapter .

Hahaha. I warned you, 200mm, shoulder mounted and no IS.
Next test is to assemble my steadycam gear and follow a moving subject at 50, 70 and 100mm. The magic of AF!

Well, i'm glad you posted this. I was VERY close to purchasing the 70-200mm 2.8 lens via sigma. I think I may spring a bit more for the sony 70-200mm 2.8.

Tested the IS (OS) and AF on the Sigma 17-50 2.8 and 70-200 2.8:

The 70-200 had problems with the AF hunting back and forth.
This is indoors, although it was well-lit.
I'll try tomorrow (Sunday) outdoors if it doesn't rain.

How old is that Sigma lens?

Some Sigma lenses had an issue with SLT cameras. Sigma offers to fix the lens for free if it's one of the lens that has the issue. Most of the lenses in the shops should be already fixed.

Here is the link to Sigma site about the issue:

http://www.sigmaphoto.com/news/noti...pha65-owners-using-sigmas-sony-fitting-lenses

they list all the lenses that need update (which is free). 70-200 is one of them

I tested the Sigma 70-200 again, this time outdoors.
With and without an ND filter.
It's still the same issue with the AF hunting.

I'll try to test it with a Sony Alpha still camera to see if it's an issue with the lens.
The other Sigma lens (17-50) works fine, and it's older.

I'm not able to select the AF area or focus point - it always uses the wide area.

The Sony 70-200 2.8 is the newer model of my Minolta 80-200 and Minolta 70-200 2.8. These are G lenses and are excellent lenses. Bokeh and contrast is beautiful. If you're on a budget, go for the 70-210 4.0 beercan. The 15 phase AF of the LA-EA2 adapter is intelligent but not perfect. It is way better than contrast focusing but I wish it had spot auto focusing which is a feature you find in the Nex 5 & 7. I do hope another firmware update V3.0 will have it.

I am thinking you need to avoid a lens that starts out with F4.0 because the adapter only gives autofocus at F3.5??????

No, The adapter gives AF at 3.5 OR the fastest apeture of your lens if it doesn't go open to 3.5. (per Sony)

Edit: That video looks like there is a definate problem with that lens / adapter combo. Seems to focus fine then jumps to a NON focus state. (ie, NOTHING in the frames is in focus vs jumping back and forth from one thing in focus to another thing in focus) Which, If I understand PDAF, It shouldn't be doing that....

I think I may wait until I see more examples before I purchase a la-ea2 and switch to alpha lenses. If I do switch, it will be to Sony lenses.

It's F3.5 max only for faster lenses. It's either wide open (which can be F5.6 for some lenses, like the 70-400) or F3.5 if the lens is faster than F3.5
