Anyone else experimenting with this setup? I just got this lens from craigslist and am going out to get my own HV40 to test this out.

I bought a Kowa 2x anamorphic lens awhile back, I've been meaning to shoot some tests, but haven't gotten around to it. I would be interested to see some more footage from your setup.

i got finals this week but this weekend i may get some exterior shots. i need to think of a place around town that has some kind of a narrative quality to film. i still need to wave a penlight in front of the kowa and see what kinds flares it makes.

I just ordered the adapter ring for my lens today, next week I can start shooting some tests.

Thanks for the vids. I like the streaks that anamorphic lenses make (ever since the new star trek movie anyways.)

I might be shooting a micro budget feature this January and I'm considering using anamorphics on HV20's.

I'll put my tests up once I get my step up ring.

That is wide as hell. What kind of Kowa is it? How far do you have to zoom it to avoid vignetting? I pretty much zoom almost all the way in.

You should check out these lenses on ebay. All you need is a step ring from 43mm to 52mm. And you don't have to zoom, there is zero vignetting, and follow focusing is way easy if you get a one of these: http://irvdesign.com/product/mfr/

I set the ratio to like -85/-90 in FCP

I do have to zoom in a bit to eliminate vignetting. I am just having trouble hitting sharp focus, it gets close but not what I expect.

Are there any examples of the lens on e-bay? unfortunately, I don't have any money to throw around for testing right now.

I own one of the irv focus rings already, it does make life a lot easier.

I'm in Sony Vegas and change the pixel aspect ratio to correct for the lens, I guess I need to shoot something round to get a better idea on what to set the pixel aspect ratio to.

The footage of the snow was made with the generic, that was outdoor. I think it works really well in combo with the canon HV. No vignetting, and real easy to align. The generic lens rotates freely inside an outer shell that has 52mm threads in the back. You'll need to order a 43mm step ring to mount it. And then use some gaffer tape to keep the lens in place once aligned. I think the generic lenses on ebay are a japanese copy of the german Soligor. If not, they look damn close.

Still need to shoot some more with it. I'll try to get some shots together tomorrow. I think the lens adds to the filmic look of the HV settings. Not sure how, but I researched some footage shot on the HV20 using an old Soligor anamorphic lens and I thought it added something unique.

Here's some footage of the Soligor and HV20

Here is a thread where the premise of using such a lens with the HV camera's is argued to give a 2.35:1

Hey thx hvxer for pointing out these links and sharing your opinion on the generics. I saw these on ebay for $115 and I think I'm going to order one to mess with. I have a Letus mini with nikon mount coming in the mail so maybe I can jsut attach the generic straight to the nikon lens since it's 52mm (I think). Would love to see some more footage when you get a chance. Did you see this footage already from youngindiefilmgroup? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sVScgUtUx38

I think he's using the same generic anamorphic with a nikon 35mm lens.

I think it would be interesting to see the generic lens used on a Canon 5d's 35mm sensor.

I've also got an immaculate Singer 16-D anamorphic lens with 50mm threads that can used on a 5d. So I think I'll be asking Santa for a 5d.

Here is an interesting story on how to get good sound with the 5d, also I would imagine with the HV camera's.

I wish Red would hurry up and release the scarlet so I can waste some more money.

I think it would be interesting to see the generic lens used on a Canon 5d's 35mm sensor.

That link I posted was with a Canon 5D II, Nikon 35mm 2.8 and the Generic adapter. Not bad at all. I just purchased the generic on Ebay so once it arrives, I will post up some samples.

Regarding the Scarlet, yes I've been waiting for a long time :)

Removing the generic's lens hood?

Removing the generic's lens hood?

I've seen reviews elsewhere making comparisons between the generic anamorphic and the one made by Century. It stated that the lenses were essentially identical. The one difference that was pointed out being the rudimentary lens hood on the generic. So I'm wondering if that hood can be removed. Looking at the generic, there's a definite line of separation between the lens and the hood. So if indeed the hood screws off, I wonder what size the threads are that hold it on?
