Korean Music Video

Hello,

I finally received the final cut of a Korean music video I shot here in Vancouver back in early April '05. It's for a band named IZI, which will be airing all over Asia this summer via television, internet, and celphones. If you are Korean, don't place this on any site because it's not supposed to be released yet. It's just for this site's users to watch:

IZI - "Emergency Room"

I think the bandwidth on this website will be eaten up in no time...only 5GB so from my experience, it is gone within a day or two if I post something!

Cheers!

I want to watch but 64mb is too rich for my blood. Bad dial-up! Bad!

Congratulations on the success of the video. Hey, I might see on TV over here. Good luck!

HOLY SMOKES!
That is awesome!

I LOVE the look you have there, this is one of the best video's I've seen on here.

Way to go, man!

Really great look you have there. Sounds like a beautiful song. Being a mono-lingual idiot I didn't understand it though.
I really liked the warped edge shots. Very nice look.
Give us details, gear, settings, etc....

Thanks guys...

I think you will all be upset though to know that it wasn't DVX...it was shot on Arri SR3 Super16 :) Most of it was shot at 48 and 72fps at a 180degree shutter. The first shots of the sky are shot at a 45degree shutter for that "strobe" look. Colour timing done at Technicolour and the colourist and I worked at giving it a "Saving Private Ryan" look with it's bleached/muted colours, extreme contrast, and a greenish-tone. I shot the locked-off shots but I hired a pro steadicam operator to do all the steadicam stuff. To contrast the "saving private ryan" colours of the steadicam stuff, I used a yellowy-green colour cast on the locked off shots infront of the big rusty wall.

I just wanted to post it for any constructive criticism (photography-wise).

very strong.

the only shots that seemed weaker to me, or lacked continuity with the rest of the piece were the head shots at 1:39 and 2:05. just a style thing. how was that shot?

251-257 was a fabulous sequence

my favorite shots are at 411 -414

great job. I'm sure it will get a lot of play

oh yah, and the last two shots were well done.

how did you get the gig?

how does the location fit the song (just curious) as it seems a big part of it...

looks good. tight work. congradulations. bummer it was not the DVX though. i thought this section was only for DVX clips and grabs ??

Nicely done. The composition is great, and I really liked the color, it fit the mood of the song. I just wish I could understand the language - oh well. As for the warp effect, I liked it at first, but then it got kind of repetitive, I assume that it had something to do with the song.

I love how the reds pop - the train cars, and the trolly esp.

Nice work. Was that a super 35mm aspect ratio ? What made you choose that ? Compostion wise you seem pretty comfortable with it.

What method did you use for the singers slow mo ? For example, making the guy practice the lyrics at super speed:)

This vid had a kind of Beatles feel to it (maybe it was the shots walking across the road). Lyrically I hope it matches your colour correction choices. Tempo etc.. and mood looked head on the nail. So many vids I see put concept before intent.

Just a thought, did you ever consider doing it in one long take (a la "Touch of Evil") ?

Yep, it was shot with a super35 ratio...which I am most comfortable with. I hate 4:3 to death!

Yep, the singers practiced ahead of time singing at 1x, 2x, and 3x speed.

The director wanted a "British" band type feel to it and I think we achieved it.

The song's lyrics is about lost love..or don't play with my feelings... stuff like that. So the image/concept/background settings totally matches the mood of the song... :)

I would love to do it in one long take but that would be too hard for now! :)

Maybe later :) hehe..

Great.

I knew I was getting a "Cold Play" vibe for a reason.
Their beach vid is one of my favs.

Look forward to seeing more.

Cheers :)

that was coo. greatwork.
do you think the dvx could have pulled off similar results??? what areas would have been problematic/challenging?

thnx.

I think maybe its the playback on my real player because certain parts the audio went out of sync. I'm a big fan of Korean music videos and its always cool to see some new ones. Cool Kewl!!!

Rich, that phucken avatar is giving me the creeps! looks like my crack head neighboors.

Good stuff Norm!

Loo,

I haven't seen any DVX stuff out of 1000's that can look like that yet. Whether it has gone through extensive colour correction and film look tools... perhaps someone can do it but I havn't seen it done yet. Also, not until the HDX comes out will the true slow-mo be achievable. There are programs to simulate slow-mo by interpolating and adding frames to a video clip but it seriously degrades the image quality and isn't consistent.

On another note, I have a windows media version and I played it side by side with the Quicktime version (both were encoded with exactly the same settings in Sorenson Squeeze Pro) and the Quicktime version looks more washed out...whereas the WMV version retains the richness in shadows and dark areas.

I preferably like the WMV more now...any suggestions on what to do to match the Quicktime version?

Cheers!

Norm
