C300: Kiss Tape - One-take short film, C300 Mark II w/15.5-47

Here is a short film which I co-produced, co-wrote, co-directed, and was the Steadicam operator for. Cast of about 20 people with a five minute take.

Filmed with the C300 Mark II in 4K (though the editor didn't export in 4K) with the Canon 15.5-47 cinema zoom lens.

And a behind-the-scenes video which I edited. BTS was filmed mostly on a C300 Mark I, with a couple shots on a C100 Mark I and a smart phone.

I edited it, so it should show now. For some reason the Vimeo embed doesn't show up on some devices (such as my phone; works fine on my computer), so I added non-embedded links as well.

I say this in the spirit of many of your comments Eric, the editing was great;) Overall, it was well done and held my attention. Like all the details like the stormtrooper trying to eat the donut. Well done by all involved.

So where were you on the lens? Looked pretty close to 15.5mm's.

Wow Eric that was great! Must be stressful to have to do one take. This is an excellent demo to use. Looked like everyone had a fun time.

All the best,

Ned

Nicely done Eric. Cute concept, very impressed with all of the talent as well as your Steadicam work too. Is this the prodco you work at?

Thanks!

Though, I think Birdman was better. :) Birdman was one of the inspirations for it.

I rent office space at the location Kiss Tape was filmed at, so I share the office/studio space with two other video guys and do most of my editing work there. We each have our own video companies and hire each other on occasion for various shoots. One of the guys I wrote and directed Kiss Tape with, and the third guy filmed the behind-the-scenes video. They happen to be C-series owners as well, so we've got eight C-series cameras between the three of us.

I originally came up with the idea of Kiss Tape as I had this studio, but was tired of not having a good way to show it without giving a personal tour; photos just didn't give it justice and often made it look smaller than it is. So I thought to take my Glidecam during a regular studio shoot and walk around, but then thought it would be more interesting and creative to turn it into a narrative short film done in one take, and I'd been wanting to do a long Steadicam take style film for awhile.

So my studio partner and I slowly worked on the script during our free time over some months, and eventually got motivated to finish it when a one-take film contest came up, which had an actual deadline. So we started producing it, getting the cast together, finishing the script, and blocking the camera and talent for the whole of it with a written storyboard (before filming day). We ended up winning the one-take film contest we submitted it to.

Looks like it was about 16.5mm at around T/3.8. I think this image's settings is accurate to how we filmed it, though the settings may have been changed some by the time we filmed; we may have opened up the aperture a bit more, but I don't remember for sure.

Thanks for the deets Eric. It's nice to have colleagues who you hire and they hire you. I have the same thing except we don't all share the same produciton space. Considering most of these sorts of "one shot" clips are done with bigger resources and budgets, I think you guys did an excellent job. Good demo reel too for potential clients.

How Cine zooms work on steadicam? Is it have the same weight distribution in any focal length?
Well on this shoot we only had one focal length, and the other Steadicam shoot I did with it, I don't recall for sure if I had any re-balancing to do when changing focal length. If anything it'd be pretty minimal. Feeling the lens here I don't notice a weight shift in my hands, but that's not a good way to measure it.
