FS7: Kipon Baveyes .71 EF Focal Reducer

A short update - The bump on there image, while changing the aperture is only if IS is turned on
Without IS enabled it works like a charm - found out, that this behavior is also on the metabones EF-E MK4

There is a large difference in optical performance between Baveyes and SB Ultra

Too bad - hard to see a real comparison without that. I thought Commlite was OK until we did a side by side and saw the flaring. How would you know if it was closer to Speed booster quality or speed booster ultra,. For me $200 is nothing to pay if the image is better.

The published MTF curves really tell you all you need to know. First the performance data for the Metabones Speed Booster Ultra:
MB Ultra Charts.jpg

Now the performance data for the Kipon Baveyes:
Baveyes Charts.jpg

The charts show that the Speed Booster Ultra is much better at f/0.9 than the Baveyes is at f/1.4. Comparing f/2.0 for the MB SB Ultra to f/5.6 for the Baveyes shows an even more pronounced difference, with the Baveyes showing very poor tangential MTF at the 2/3 field zone. This rather large difference in performance is also backed up by test shots that I've done. Note that I used a Zeiss Otus 55mm f/1.4 as a master lens in order to make the master lens as perfect as possible, thus eliminating it as a variable in the test. First, this is the overall test chart image, showing the zones where 100% crops are taken, and then a comparison matrix of those 100% crops.

Ultra vs Baveyes Comparison Matrix.jpg

NOTE: I think my comparison matrix was automatically reduced in size when I uploaded it here, so the crops are really only about 50%. Even so, the difference in optical performance is obvious. If you want, I can email you a full size copy of the comparison matrix.

DISCLAIMER: I designed all the Speed Booster optics used by Metabones.

Cool

How about the warning at the bottom of the page? It says....

Note: it is not suitable for Sony NEX 35mm camcorders such as FS700.
Blue spot will occur if lens is pointed to light sources.

Any Issues? I presume this Camdiox would work well with the Samyang VDSLR EF lenses.

I have the Camdiox Alpha to NEX f
ocal reducer but have not tested it out yet. I need to get a full frame Alpha lens so maybe this may work better with the Samyang's.
