FS7: Kipon Baveyes .71 EF Focal Reducer

Just received it today from first shipment to Adorama. Note that Adorama is the US importer of Kipon, who will both retail it as well as wholesale to other dealers.

Seems a little more solid than the Metabones Speedbooster, and definitely less expensive at $408 US.

Absolutely no documentation comes with it nor is there anything on the Kipon web site.

There is a USB port so one could assume that firmware updates are possible. No button like on the Metabones so obviously no green/advanced mode. The only full-frame EF lens I have here now to test is the Canon 24-105. Quick test on the FS7 results in definite wider image and brighter image wide open. But it still registers F4 in the FS-7 viewfinder as would be expected. Autofocus with this lens is the same as it is with the Metabones Mark IV-- hunts and inexact. Now, I wouldn't necesarily use autofocus but sometimes in a run and gun situation it wouldn't hurt.

Very sturdy connection to camera and lens.

When I get hold of some additional full-frame Canon glass, I'll report on results with other lenses.

Next test will be with the Aputure DEC remote focus, which now is shipping to US. Won't get to that, though, for several weeks since I'll be on the road.

Most important thing you didn't mention - image quality esp corner quality, sharpness, CA, flaring?
Metabones went through a change in glass to create the Ultra

I'll know when I actually shoot with it. UPS came early evening so basically was just able to unpack and mount it.

First quick test-- corners sharp with no vignetting (Canon 24-105). Sharp. No vignetting. No flare. I think this one is a winner.

If you use manual glass then I currently use the Camdiox focal reducers for both Canon and Leica R which are great and cost about £70

IS works with the 24-105 !

It does focus to infinity.

Kipon claims the glass is of German formulation (not clear whether actually manufactured in Germany) and I would rate it equal to or slightly better than Metabones in construction. Now that isn't saying a lot because I don't think the Metabones is that well constructed.

More use of it will tell the tale. I will be shooting with it over the next few days.

Just in case that question was aimed at the Camdiox, I'd say the answer is exactly the same as Ned's. :)

Very solid

Too bad - hard to see a real comparison without that. I thought Commlite was OK until we did a side by side and saw the flaring. How would you know if it was closer to Speed booster quality or speed booster ultra,. For me $200 is nothing to pay if the image is better.

Ahh..Now we're getting somewhere - Can you say what your sources said without revealing who they were? I assume they were very positive about the Kipon?

Got mine today -First thoughts:

Buildquality - Good

Picture - very good

By now - I only have a Sigma EF 70-200 2.8 IS -

Works kind of - Aperture shifts picture similar to the old Metabones bug while changing - But no flash - just a little bump

IS does not work with this Sigma - but I had similar troubles with the comlite adapter and this sigma lens.

in the next days I get my Canon 24-105 L F4 back and will test this one too.

My other Canon 17-55 EF-S 2.8 IS does not match on the Kipon, although Kipon states EF-S on the adaptor.

Will test more later this week.
