Kinefinity new cameras

EF became popular because so many people own Canon lenses, not because it is such a great mount. It is just a lens mount. Getting everybody to band together and make a unified mount would be like herding cats. :)

A unified mount works against the interest of the dominant manufacturers. Had it not been for the EF/F/FE/MFT domination of the industry, Samsung could have gotten its foot in. As it was, it barely tapped at the door (there were other reasons, obviously).

Oh and just because PL is shiznit doesn't mean its lenses have to be so expensive either. But it's not a very competitive market due to its price point and the number of participants.

I tried out a Kinefinity last year at NAB, It had a really nice image, but the model I used didn't have a bunch of features working due to firmware. I never researched it again to see if it was ever complete. As other have stated, support, sending your camera to China for repair, etc... It looks very much like the Red cameras though. If they had a repair facility in the states, I would consider dropping a few k to play with one.

Well, PL is great, but I'd hardly call it universal. You can put basically any lens on a m43 or E mount (including PL), but PL mount only takes PL lenses.

If they let me decide that new universal mount, it would sound as follows:

Then you can make your universal-plate-to-whatever-mount adapter. There would be $30 aluminium dumb adapters, and $1000 titanium ones with electronics and whatnot.

If we're designing a new universal open source lens mount I'd like to add that it should have the following features:
1. Autofocus control
2. Power zoom control (constant and variable with speed control)
3. Power aperture control (again constant and variable with speed control)
4. Electrical passthrough for acessories mounted to the front of the lens (like for instance a ring light) or power for things like light up witness marks. Dimmer ability (0-100).
5. The ability to pass lens metadata data back to the camera body.
6. Would be cool if it could also pass sensor data back to the body as well. A huge amount of data quickly so if someone wanted to design a lens with a sensor built in, they could pass the raw data from that sensor back to the camera body for processing and storing.

That's what the "X electrinic pins" are for. Zero chance this will happen, though. As others said, big manufacturers have all the incentives to avoid this, and if the small ones try then we have this.

PL is universal enough for the movie industry. All the best glass is available in PL.

You completely missed the point of using a sub mount underneath. How many potential buyers of low end cheap cinema cameras (such as from BMD and Kinefinity) can not shoot 100% of their projects exclusively with PL lenses?? Many many many many of them!

Lens cost isn't the only reason that other mounts have value. Have you seen any 800+mm PL mount lenses? That might not be all that useful on a film set, but it would be a huge asset for filming, say wildlife.

And have you seen any PL mount lenses that can achieve magnification beyond 1:1 for photographing tiny critters?

Plus... PL mount lenses tend to be fairly large and heavy compared to SLR lenses for a given focal length, due to the mechanical requirements. That's a major consideration if you're taking your camera into the back country or up a mountain...

Exactly! I was just mentioning one reason, but there are many other reasons why having an adaptable sub mount is beneficial.

Yep, I agree completely.

I'm a bit surprised that currently only Sony and Kinefinity have lens mounts with locking quick release mounts.

Damn, this little camera seems too good to be true. Fits on a DSLR gimbal, has low power consumption and 4k+ prores and works with a focal reducer and a has a global shutter mode? If the image quality is anywhere in the red raven or even Ursa mini 4.6k range this thing could really be something.

It certainly seems to highlight all the things that are a real pain about RED cameras (no full res prores, no basic control system or monitor outs or power input on the brain, high power consumption, no focal reducer, no xlr input even on base, expander, very expensive media/aks, etc). And I'm speaking as someone who has a Scarlet-W preorder in...

Looks nice. With all the trouble with the new Blackmagic cameras I'm looking for an alternative. Hope the rolling shutter scan rate is decent compared to the Kinefinity 6K which imo was horrendous.

The biggest question someone needs to ask them at NAB and find out for sure is what resolutions and framerates you are able to record in ProRes.

Their website says specs are subject to change and they also have an asterisk next to ProRes recording..."*Major Resolution". The KineRAW says "*All Resolution".

It looks like they have eliminated CineForm and CinemaDNG from the new cameras, which only leaves ProRes (new addition) and KineRAW.

If you cannot shoot high frame rates in ProRes or certain resolutions, this is a very big got you.

Transcoding via KineStation every time you shoot something is just not worth it in my opinion...but if you have the time, maybe it's not an issue.

Actually just read this:

"TERRA can record up to 5K or 6K ProRes 422HQ directly to get super fast workflow with very high quality footages: ProRes 422HQ (10bits) is much better than codecs based on H264, and compatible with all post-workflow softwares. Actually, TERRA is the only camera which can record ProRes 422HQ up to 5K or 6K in the market."

The HFRs are more than likely KineRAW. Don't quote me though.

Yes framerate limited prores could be a concern, hopefully nab will bring more details...

Hopefully it also can downres to 4k in camera to shoot full sensor 4k prores...
