Hey guys,

If you want to check out my latest little creation, check out my little 1min 11sec film called KILL ME.

I did it for a little school project for VFS so don't mind the "vfs presents" and "copyright vfs 2004" stuff. I had to put it there even though I used my own DVX and equipment (besides lights). I shot this all on Sunday (yesterday) and edited all that same night until 6AM!

Did some compositing and other stuff for it too. It was a fun and interesting experience :)

Wow John!

I wrote that like 1 second ago and you replied already! =)
It's there now... I modified the original post just now!

;D

Re: "KILL ME" - My latest little film.

Ha ha! Cool :) So am I! Although I am exhausted from the lack of sleep!

I shot the little film from 12pm to 3pm and then edited the film from 8pm to 6am. Then I woke up at 7am to get ready for class for 9am! Never slept since...hehe

Re: "KILL ME" - My latest little film.

looks great norm.. my quicktime seemed to re-interlace the movie but its been acting up.

I love it when people cross the axis... I frikin hate that stupid rule :)

Re: "KILL ME" - My latest little film.

Nice job Norm! I loved the color/lighting and the claustrophobic feel. Nice use of tension build up. You manged to say alot in so little time! Shot on Sunday and Edited and done by tonight huh? Nice! The talent were not bad either!

Whats VFS by the way?

Re: "KILL ME" - My latest little film.

Thanks guys :)

Oh, VFS is just a local film school here in Vancouver. Vancouver Film School.

Yeah, I only had 3 peppers and 2 redheads to work with! Oh, and 2 C-stands, 2 nets, 1 half net, 1 full net, and 1 silk :-/

It looks a lot better on my HDTV. I hate that interlacing that shows up when I encode the DV file to QT using Sorenson Squeeze.

Is there a way to crop the in-camera 16:9 letterbox in Vegas (I used Premiere 6.5), and then export the squeezed image back into a non-letterboxed true 16:9 window in MOV format?

Premiere adds interlace to my 24p footage :(

Oh, and when he yells the 2nd last "KILL ME" in the close-up shot, I would like to add a digital shake to the whole frame to enhance the anger and tension in his voice. Any ideas or tips on how to achieve this effect and what programs I could use?

Thanks!

Norm

Re: "KILL ME" - My latest little film.

Talk about funny timing. You posted just before I did.
Anyway, very cute little film. I didn't understand it at all, but given that you did it in basically a 24hr period of time, who cares! ;D
I don't know if it's completed or not, but something you could do in post to have the story make more sense would be to make the guy's eyes glow or have his teeth start growing like he's a vampire or werewolf to be, etc. (just a suggestion)

The color and editing was beautiful.
Question: Did you do the color in post? In camera? Or with Gels?

To answer your question, I believe you can do a frame shake of sorts using most image stabilizer plug-ins that come with various NLE's. There's one in Final Cut Pro 4 that would do the trick.

Re: "KILL ME" - My latest little film.

Lol :)

Yeah, it wasn't supposed to be understood really! Basically this exercise was just to see how well we could direct actors, lighting, camera style, and editing and had to be only a maximum of about 8 short lines of dialogue. We weren't allowed to use flats that they had available so luckily, I found all these tall plastic wavy things which I lined the walls with and there were all these wooden boxed shape objects that I used as those foreground objects in the master shot. ;D

Those suggestions are a great idea though! I never thought of the story that way. My initial story was about the guy who was holding the gun to be a timid rookie gangster who never killed anyone before. The guy on his knees killed the other guy's boss and doesn't want to be found and tortured slowly so he wanted a quick death. It would be easier for me to make his eyes glow than to have teeth growing!

That stabilization idea is good. I think I know how to do it because I experienced that weird shake before when I tried to stabilize something in the past using 2d3 steadymove.

Re: "KILL ME" - My latest little film.

Wow, that was an intense minute. The color was awesome! Ans as storyteller asked, was the color correction done in post or with gels durning production? The green light and feel really raises the tension. Don't really understand what happens but it is still really sweet. Can't wait to see more of your work! Rock.

Re: "KILL ME" - My latest little film.

Oh and the soundtrack rocks too. Goes along perfectly with the short.

Re: "KILL ME" - My latest little film.

Thanks!

Oh yeah, I forgot to answer that question :)

I used green gels on all the 4 lights. It was green in the screen but not green enough so I pumped up the green gritty feel in-camera a little by adjusting the scene settings and especially the master pedastal and color temp.

I didn't do anything in post to the footage in terms of the color.

It turned out a lot better than I thought it would. Hope that helps!

Re: "KILL ME" - My latest little film.

Hi Norm, Cool Flick.

If you are using Vegas, then I would use the Pan & Crop and add a keyframe for each up and down movment. I know it sounds time consumming, but it looks good when finished.

I did this for a Software video I did for one of my products. You can view it here:

Norm

If you are using VEGAS you can select FILM EFFECTS and use JITTER. YOu must turn off the GRAIN & TINT however, but CRANK UP the JITTER AMOUNT to 32.0000

Just a thought. I did a quick sample this morning and it worked!

Re: "KILL ME" - My latest little film.

WOW, I liked this a lot! The overall feel of this was perfect, music, lighting, framing...

Re: "KILL ME" - My latest little film.

Nicely done. Definitely served the purpose you set out for. Looking forward to more!

Re: "KILL ME" - My latest little film.

The jitter works great.  The film effects filters in Vegas really impressed me.

I love it when people cross the axis... I frikin hate that stupid rule

I *totally* agree.  Just pay attention to what you're doing!

Norm -- well-executed. Loved the green. I don't especially like violent films, but I think you did a great job.

Re: "KILL ME" - My latest little film.

Intense. I don't watch much violent stuff so I'm not "desensitized." Therefore, I felt the intensity quite strongly. I loved the music. Where'd you get it? Also, did you use a crane at the beginning of the part when the two are in the room, or a stabilizer? This didn't look like a one minute movie, but a scene from a longer one. Good shooting. Acting was intense. (Have I said the word intense or one of its derivaties enough?)

Re: "KILL ME" - My latest little film.

Nice camera moves, great color (tho sometimes too green), and great talent! I thought it was well done tho like most everyone else, I didn't get what happened in the end. But that was kinda the point I think. :)
