What a way to celebrate 25 years of the Handycam brand, right? Out of absolutely (almost) nowhere, Sony has just upended the entire prosumer camcorder universe, and it may very well sway you from purchasing that Canon EOS 7D for video purposes. For all intents and purposes, this is Micro Four Thirds for your camcorder, but since Olympus and Panasonic own that specific technology, Sony's left calling the NEX-VG10 an "interchangeable lens HD camcorder." Moreover, it's the first Handycam to sport an Exmor APS HD CMOS sensor (the same one found in the NEX-5 and NEX-3), and it'll shoot 1080p (1,920 x 1,080/60i at 24Mbps, if we're being precise) with a wealth of E-mount and A-mount lenses. When not handling live action, it's also capable of snapping stills at 14.2 megapixels, and the 18-200mm lens that's bundled with it is about as versatile as they come. Budding videographers will also appreciate the Quad Capsule Spatial Array Stereo Microphone (yes, seriously), not to mention the 3-inch swivel display, Optical Steadyshot image stabilization, BIONZ processor and twin accessory shoes. There's no internal storage to speak of, but it will accept SDHC / SDXC (huzzah!) in addition to MS Pro Duo. Get ready to get wowed this September when it lands for around $2,000.

HMC40 over this thing anyday.

It's either 1080i or 1080p30 only - it will produce 60i files but it is unclear if it shoots 60i or shoots 30p and splits it into a 60i stream. Either way, you've locked in to that one frame rate.

There's alot of unanswered questions about this new camera but for the majority of people the HMC40 will be the winner.

If it shot 24p, then I could be all over it. But... I'm a Panasonic man myself. Also, no option for XLR = No Thanks! Give me an HMC40, 150, or a Sony NX5U cam anyday!

The camera looks interesting, BUT ... there's give and take in any camera; while you gain in one or more area(s), you loose in another area or areas.

I'm using this post as a jumping point, but not necessarily picking on you per se.

The thing I find fascinating here, is that this camera is being railed against. It's like we've lost the big picture here.

First, not EVERYONE wants or needs to shoot 24p. For all those people wanting to shoot sports, plays, other things in darker venues, where their current handycams are struggling, this seems like an excellent way to get there at a fair price.

Second, the fact that the 5D not so long ago only shot 30p didn't slow sales one bit. People lived with it and worked around it. And that camera is STILL more expensive than this Sony. Not to mention this camera doesn't have a 12 minute time limit.

Third, people are talking badly about this camera, but then turn RIGHT back around and praise a camera that still needs to have pulldown removed to get to 24p.

Fourth, XLR inputs? Really? How many CONSUMER based cameras, which is all this claims to be, have XLR inputs?

Folks, this is Sony's first real foray into this market. They've already promised a more professional level model and shown a mockup of it already. It saddens me no end to see manufacturers dipping their toes into the market we've been clamoring for, only to get shouted down because a $2k camera doesn't have all the features on a EX1 or HPX300.

Is this camera perfect? No. Is this camera aimed at our market? No. So why get all bent out of shape?

The HMC40 is the same price. This camera should cost no more than $1499.99

If you look around hard enough, you can score an HMC40 w/ XLR adapter for $2000.

What's the sensor size in the HMC40? One could argue that since the sensors in the HMC40 are the same as those in $400 handycams, it should cost no more than $500.

+1 for Perrone.

I am a big Panna fan and have invested significantly in their products using both the HMC40 and P2 products. But a tool is just a tool. If you are driving screws, get the best screwdriver. Do I wish Panna would come out with a similar compact cam that would let me use my Canon glass.....YES, but they haven't

I posted several times a few years ago for an AF100 style cam so as to avoid the DSLR workflow. Now that is finally happening a little late in my view.

In this case, Sony is innovating a consumer compact with interchangeable lenses. Would I trade XLR inputs for interchangeable SLR lenses; on many days, yes. How good is the cam, we don't know yet. For those HMC40 owners who are dismissing an innovative cam before even seeing it sounds like sour grapes to me.

People have NO IDEA how Sensor Size is the #1 thing which people need to be looking at. For this reason alone is why DSLRs are as popular as they are...... SENSOR SIZE..... Unless I'm working for a professional company with an entire Grip Truck and Permits I would NEVER shoot Guerrilla style again with a camera that has a small sensor.

Cieloent,

You didn't specify what a small sensor size is to you. Do you shoot guerilla with an HPX500? I would argue there is more to it than sensor size. What about codec, audio, CMOS vs CCD just to start? Isn't this oversimplification?

One of the things I love about the HMC40 is the ability to be more or less inconspicuous and still have some decent features and great IQ in good light. I've been in situations where I am shooting with the HMC40 and folks think I am an UncleBob with a 20 year old VHS cam. Um, sorry Bob Diaz 8-0

Correct me if I'm wrong, but wouldn't shooting with an entire grip truck and permits be the complete opposite of shooting guerrilla style?

Also, sorry, but a camcorder that only shoots 30p (over 60i, because native 30p obviously makes no sense, right?) isn't going to be ideal for everyone, regardless of the sensor size and what kind of lenses it would take.

What Perrone said. I find it another encouraging portent of things to come.

Reasoned comparison benefits everyone - bashing doesn't.

People have NO IDEA how Sensor Size is the #1 thing which people need to be looking at.

Or, maybe they should be deciding their artistic goals, looking at footage, and choosing the tools which give them what they need to achieve those goals.

I've said it many times -- you can approach art like an artist, or you can approach it like an engineer. One of those is more likely to produce better art.

I dunno, I just thought the title of this thread was in sour taste, that's all.
i apologize for that.

now, i am no expert in the field, but many many time si have seen people spending hundreds of dollars to acquire that DOF everyone dies for. with the Sony camera, is just a lens away....that in itself gives this camera some points.
now, yes...the camera may not have the desired frame rate. i still think it is worth checking it out. production hasn't even stared, s there might be a good chance that Sony re-thinks this and fixes some of the stuff.

i love my HMC-40, so if i was to buy, maybe do it as a second camera? or maybe not buy it at all....

the kick in the nuts part comes from both camera costing exactly the same and one of them having the advantage of interchangeable lenses....that's all :)
