Kevin Smith's Red State

The first half I was all in but then it got a little over the top when the one liners and action scenes started flowing. I still think it looks pretty cool. Thank you

"Three high school boys answer an online ad from a woman seeking wild sex and find themselves face-to-face with a supernatural force that threatens to destroy them."

Supernatural force? Really? Did I miss something in the trailer?

Wait, I thought Kevin Smith was quitting the film business so…..this is his last movie? Right? Now if you'll excuse me, I have to go listen to listen to some Jay-Z and watch old tapes of Michael Jordan playing basketball.

I'm still a little perplexed that it wasn't picked up by a studio.

In the end did he just not like any of the deals and figured he'd make more money via self-distributing?

The notion that not a single studio wanted to buy this sounds a little like Smith-bashing B.S. It must have been about what they were offering?

Regardless, can't wait to see this one. Certainly going to post the trailer wherever I can. I'd love to see VOD start to really take off.

EDIT: Also I thought it was of note to mention that this flick was shot on the RED and 5D. The critics seem to absolutely love it and are calling it his best to date. But obviously there's a lot of controversy surrounding it, so who knows how the IMDB and Tomatoe stats will balance out.

His last movie is going to be his Hockey period piece Hit Somebody.

Yeah, I personally don't understand why you would ever definitively state that you're "never" going to do something again, especially like this.

It would be interesting, though, if he wants to do more long-form stuff. Maybe it's just the system of movie-making that he doesn't like, so maybe he'll start doing things that look like movies but are actually more serial? I just don't believe that he's leaving writing/directing altogether. Extremely doubtful. Maybe Hit Somebody will be his last go around as writer/director, but I highly doubt it's the last film that has his hands in it.

Great trailer, I love the set up in the beginning, though I wish the entire movie would be like the beginning, I could do without all the shootings and explosions.

Keep in mind, he also repeatedly said that "Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back" would be the last time he visited those characters or the View Askewniverse - then did Clerks 2.

He's retiring because he wants to do podcasting full-time (which he's pretty much already doing). I listen religiously to his podcasts, which, admittedly, I've actually come to enjoy more than his films (though I still love his films). He talks about his plans of retiring film and trading it in for podcasting, and I believe him when he says he wants to retire, and I believe him when he says he's tired of filmmaking. Whether or not it means he's going to stay retired, I don't know. He could end up having another idea five, maybe ten years from now. But for now, he seems pretty clearly devoted to podcasting. The size of the network he created in less than a year is pretty impressive.

Yeah, I could see him going the more "mogul" route.

I mean, let's face it, the money isn't really in being the filmmaker. And if he's getting all his creative wants met via the podcasts, maybe he really won't be back on a movie set again.

I'm an avid listener of his podcasts too... I think his main point was that a studio will spend a large amount of $ on marketing, which wont influence the box office (in his opinion). He thinks that he has a stable audience that will come regardless of the TV/Radio ads they hear.

$4 million budget - and i think he's made a fair amount of that back touring with it alone. Either way, its interesting to see someone go around the regular studio system to distribute a flick.

Saw this last night and really enjoyed it. It takes the lunacy of the WBC, exaggerates it, adds even more lunacy, throws in some horror, action and comedy. The first half of the movie was beautiful, and the second half waned a bit too much for me (started getting restless). Some scenes could've been trimmed a bit for pacing, but overall I thought it was very intriguing and enjoyable. Definitely shows the positives and negatives of Kevin Smith as a director, but also demonstrates how far he has come in his career. Well worth a watch, and so is the 45 minutes "Making Of" doc in the special features.

The last scene was fantastic! :D About the ending as a whole though:

Spoiler: 1
I really thought -- when the trumpet started blaring and Cooper started talking about the rapture -- that the actual rapture was going to take place, and the ending was going to be Cooper and his followers left here on Earth. I thought that would've been the ultimate slap in the face, and a ballsy ending. I enjoyed the ending for the most part, but I definitely left feeling like he had missed an opportunity.

I thought it was completely unpredictable and it kept me tense the whole way through. It had no specific genre, no real protagonist, and it just jumped all over the place in terms of timing and pace. I loved it.
If Michael Parks is not nominated best supporting actor then it would be a real shame.

Just a heads up for those who don't know, the film is already streaming on Netflix.

SPOILERS

I think the only flaw of the film was explaining the horn. I think they should have just left it a mystery/up for interpretation.

This movie looks terrible... like literally, the visuals.

Doesn't even look like there was any post magic done on the DSLR footage...

I guess it's because it's a Kevin Smith (recognized name) movie that I feel it should look a lot better.
