Kernel Panics are Killing Me. Please help...

Hello all.

I know there's already a bunch of kernel panic posts, but I can't seem to find any answers. This post is out of desperation and I apologize if it's repetitive, I apologize.

I'm currently out of the country preparing to shoot a documentary. Before I left, I did all sorts of tests and imported many P2 cards without any issues. However, now that I'm overseas, I'm running into problems galore. (Murphy's law, right?)

Right now, I can't transfer any of my P2 cards. I'm running them through 1394 firewire right into the computer. They worked before, but now - no method will do the trick. I tried drag and drop, P2CMS and even ShotPut P2, but all I get is Kernel Panics and freezes. I know a lot of people have run into this problem.

Here at my system specs:
Mac OS X 10.5.5
2.4 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo MacBook
2 GB RAM
Final Cut Studio 6.0
Quicktime 7.5.5

Any suggestions to a way I might be able to fix this? I've read may of these problems are RAM-related, is this the case? Also, should I reinstall OS X and start from scratch? Should I dump straight to a hard drive?

This couldn't come at a more inconvenient time. I guess I could shoot on tape, but tape isn't why I bought an HVX.

Any help at all would be appreciated.

Thanks a bunch,
Matt

What is your exact workflow? Do you use a Duel Adapter? What apps are you running when you are trying to transfer the cards? Do you have P2CMS installed and has it created a P2 Database file on your system HD?

Further Info

My exact workflow is connecting the camera directly via 1394 firewire. I am not using a duel adapter.

As for the applications, I've been trying to run nothing but the transfer program (ShotPut, P2CMS). I've closed all other applications to try and limit my problems.

As for P2CMS, it is installed and I have created a P2 Database on my system HD.

I uninstalled and re-installed both of my RAM, although they don't appear to be the problem.

Thanks for your time and help with this matter.

Best,
Matt

Switch to USB.

After constant freezes and assorted errors from Firewire that came and went and came back again, I gave up on it entirely (aside from directly recording live into the computer, which, oddly enough, seems to work fine), and ever since I haven't had a single problem with transferring files via USB on a Mac. There's no down side to USB, as far as I can tell.

Yes - THANK GOD!

Yes - THANK GOD!

I can't believe the solution is so simple.

I immediately tried USB and had no problems with any of the methods. Drag 'n drop, P2CMS, ShotPut - they all worked without a single screw-up.

Why does every book and website discourage using a USB if you're using a mac? With all the trouble I've had with firewire, I can't imagine not using USB. Not only is it reliable, but it's fast.

Success, my friends!

Thank you for your help. You are the best.
