having the direct kelvin option for white balance adjustment on the 60D. never had a camera with that feature before. can see how it might be handy at times...

anyone have thoughts?

is having it, enough of a reason to go with a 60D over a T3i?

You can manually white balance on any of the canon DSLRs. No selling point in my eyes. Doesn't the T2i/T3i have Kelvin also... I will have to check mine in the morning.

t3i doesnt have the direct temp selection. just the preset increments and of course traditional custom method. i just thought being able to dial in specific temps would come in handy one day... like quick setting 2 cams from across a room.

We use the k value (incl ML on 550D) to more accurately match all cameras for multiple angles on the same shot. It saves a lot of time in post. Other manual WB options never work out quite as accurate (matching multiple cameras).

no, the rebels don't have kelvin, jut custom white balance (take a picture, use it for WB), which, in any case, is my preferred method (even having kelvin, I find it much easier to use custom WB, and it usually leads to better results)

yeah, i played with that on my GH2. and thought it was a novel feature.

i was shooting a multi cam live stream with 5 hpx170s at SXSW music fest in austin a few months ago. and there were a couple of times where a shooter couldnt get his wb to match the rest of us. would have been nice to be able to call over the walkie "3800 doofus!"

As far as Canon goes, they have the absolute BEST auto white balance there is. If you do some testing you will see what im talking about, set it by temp, then go auto. Most likely it will be dead on. Since the hv30, I have always been impressed with their auto white balance. And im a manual only kind of shooter.

Strangely enough, this is one of the few features I keep on Auto while recording Video. Honestly the AWB on these Canon Dslrs is excellent.

AWB is awesome for photo, but I personally don't want changes to occur while panning a shot that may involve a more lighted scene from another. I would feel more confident if I have control since it's just a button away.

Lately I've found myself manually setting Kelvin on the 550D with Magic Lantern as well.
The other day, I did a shoot without ML and I realized that doing it the old way was very cumbersome (Filling the frame with white, snapping a picture, digging through the menu, etc).

I've used AWB a few times, but always regretted it afterwards. I'm glad it works for some people, but I've found that I don't trust the camera's automatic features for much of anything.

If it's one camera I use whatever is handy. For multiple camera's we make everyone shoot Kelvin. Especially time saving as lighting changes to have the DOP (or whoever) to be able to call out to drop the Kelvin by 400 or raise it to 3500K. Saves tons of time in post.
