GH3 Kaua'i Hawaii

Even a nickname like "The Garden Island" fails to do justice to Kauai's beauty. Verdant trees grow canopies over the few roads, and brooding mountains are framed by long, sandy beaches, coral reefs, and sheer sea cliffs. Pristine trade winds moderate warm daily temperatures while offering comfort for deep, refreshing sleep through gentle nights. (Fodor's)

That's it! I'm selling everything and moving there. But before I do I must ask - what lens was used? That's some unreal color. Touched it up a bit in post did you? Or does that place really look like that?

Get yourself a Lumix 12-35 f2.8, set your GH to Vivid, and you're good to go Michael. No grading required for Kaua'i, it has its own rich color...

Thanks for watching.

You probably can't afford it….believe me I looked into moving there after visiting about 3 times….
I have some friends who moved there and built a house. But I think he sold his company for $10 million!!! LOL

I'll attest to the high price of gas ($4.50) and food, but the island is small and lunch on the beach is priceless.

Funny you should say that - I pulled the trigger behind 2 beers late last night on that very camera/lens combo on sale on Amazon. And I was gonna go to Maui for a few weeks next Spring but now I may have to snorkle on over to that other little island and see if my GoPro housing really is pressure proof to 10 fathoms. "Vivid" eh?

Lovely stuff. Man it's great to see some nice saturated color and full dynamic range contrast for a change compared to the dull, lifeless, washed out flat images that some people think passes for a film look.

Many thanks for watching and commenting. Very glad you enjoyed the color.

IMO: The GH3 can produce great color which requires no grading and little correction.

Great choice. I hope you and the GH3 get along marvelously...

Dan,

This is a wonderful video! Like others, it makes me want to pack up and head for Hawaii. The color is absolutely stunning...

Was the catamaran trip one of the dinner cruises I've heard about?

Yeah I already like it a lot even tho all I've shot so far is the roofers working on my guesthouse. Say - I have the 12-35 and the Lumix 45-200 f4-5.6 which is more than decent, covers a lot of ground and plus I'm waiting for an adaptor so I can use some of my nice old Pentax manual lenses left over from my Ricoh film camera. But I'm considering at least one really high end ultra-fast mid range prime like the Voigtlander 25mm f0.95 or the Panny/Leica 25mm f1.4 for that extra dose of mojo for those things they do so well on a GH3. We've all seen terrific pictures and video with both of those. Any thoughts about those 2 lenses or which one you'd buy if you were in the market for such a lens?

Great shots Dan! It's nice to see people using in-camera color and it resulting in something so sumptuous. I actually came across your piece on youtube before I saw it here and "liked" it! If Hawaii wants to get more tourists they need to license your video!

I have the same question as Michael and to that I would add consideration for the Voigtlander 17.5mm f/.95.

Michael,

Glad to hear you're warming up to the GH3. Sorry I can't be much help with lenses other than Lumix. For low light I use the 20mm f1.7. I also use the 14mm f2.5 which isn't much faster than the 12-35, but is very small.

Best of luck,
