K-Tone Picture Profiles

Anyone looking for some new avenues for their filmmaking business may want to see if there are some neo-burlesque or Pin Up artists in their area that need video work.

Great thinking David!

I came across an amazing collection of early sixties Playboys recently and thought that look would be great to replicate... Then I found a new magazine that is already copying that classic fifties/sixties pin up look.

Just a little update:

I´m working my way towards the skin tones.
Since the K-Tone profiles already work fine with landscapes and anything without a skin,
nailing the skin tones is a PITA.

I´m aiming for Kodachrome 25, that was discontinued in the early 60s. It has pretty strong reds but that doesn´t make the skin redish.
So this is the hardes hurdle for me to overcome, since the FS100 already leans towards redish skin.
But I´m getting closer.

I talked my girfriend into some tests without any makeup (which was not easy, as I can tell you).

Not really there yet, but it´s getting better.

Frank

Edit: Looks way more crushed, from what I see on my calibrated NLE monitor .

You guys want something to play with? Okay here we go:

Most exclusive beta version (K-Tone 0.6) for DVXuser fellows ;-)

Black Level: +1
Gamma Standard (indoor) Cinematone1 (outdoor)
Black Gamma: middle, +7
Knee: 90, +2
Color Mode: ITO709, +8
Color Level -2
Color Phase -7
Color Depth: R+7, G 0, B+6, C+5, M+6, Y+5
WB-Shift: LB-5, CC+2
Detail 0

Expose 1-2 stops under and dial in WB manualy, by looking at skin tones only.
If you got the skin where you want it, all other parameters are fine (for that profile).
If you don´t shoot something with skin, a lot of that parameters is tied to WB and
since this is a "out of the box" profile, that requires no or less grading (depending on your situation),
try to get the look you want (close as possible) by dialing it in with the manual WB.

I had the pleasure to shoot a piece for "Carry The Load" using this profile exclusively. The shoot consisted of dramatically lit interviews of returning veterans and also some b-roll of their re-immersion in civilian life. The footage looks amazing and the look is perfect for this piece. Normally I grade 99% of my stuff but this was a fast turn around without me as editor so the footage needed to be close. I think they may need to drop the black level a tish but that's it. The client loves this look. Great job Frank and thank you for this great profile!

congrats on "carry the load" it sounds like a worthy project.

just to clarify, which of frank's picture profiles did you use for indoors with controlled lighting and no time to grade?
